  • Adults-only hideaway 10 minutes’ drive from Beaulieu in Hampshire
  • National Motor Museum 10 minutes’ drive; New Forest 15 minutes
  • Stylish shepherd’s hut with a full kitchen, ensuite and private garden
Like the sound of a romantic couple of nights tucked away in the gorgeous New Forest countryside? Surrounded by meadows and wildlife, Slowhayes Retreat is a peaceful and adults-only shepherd’s hut especially designed for two, providing a wonderfully private Hampshire spot to relax and enjoy being around nature. Inside, the spacious wooden shepherd’s hut is decked out in stylish and top-quality furnishings; it has a kingsize walk-around double bed, a cosy woodburning stove, comfortable dining area and a fully equipped kitchen with everything you need for a self-catering stay. There is also a bathroom with a mains toilet and electric shower. Step outside to your own private garden, equipped with a barbecue and firepit for alfresco dining; you can sip a morning coffee while listening to the birds chirp, watch the sunset or wait for deer, barn owls and bats to (hopefully) put in an appearance. And you’ll never be completely without animal company, as the site owners’ rare Suri alpacas graze nearby. Rural and secluded it might be, but Slowhayes is also located within easy striking distance of the New Forest National Park, Beaulieu and the Hampshire coast.

Local attractions

Where to start your exploration of Hampshire and the New Forest? Sitting on its namesake river, Beaulieu (10 minutes’ drive) will keep you busy with its indie shops and art galleries. It’s also home of a ruined Cistercian abbey with displays on monastic life, the grand waterside Palace House, which has 13th-century origins, and the fabled National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, where you can find anything from red London buses to streamlined supercars. Fortify yourselves with a cream tea in Lyndhurst (15 minutes) before diving off into the New Forest National Park to see free-roaming ponies, cattle and deer on cycling tracks or footpaths leading through ancient woods and across open heathland. Brockenhurst (25 minutes) is another hiking and biking hub in the national park – and you just may get to see ponies wandering freely down its high street. If you fancy a day on the Solent seaside, Lee Beach (20 minutes) has stunning views across to the Isle of Wight. The ferry from Lymington (25 minutes, with a Georgian-era high street full of unusual shops) takes 40 minutes to Yarmouth if you’d like to spend a day on the island.
