  • Small eco-friendly site on a peaceful Hampshire working farm
  • Winchester, Portsmouth and Marwell Zoo all 20 minutes' drive away
  • In the South Downs National Park, close to the Meon Valley Trail
What’s your favourite summer soundtrack? If the answer is birds singing in the trees overhead and cows gently mooing away nearby, then you’ll be in your element at Midlington Meadows, a peaceful Hampshire site where such sounds provide the background throughout the day. This pop-up site is part of a quiet rural farm about a mile from the village of Droxford, in the south-western corner of the South Downs National Park (around 20 minutes' drive from Winchester and Portsmouth and half an hour from Southampton). Pitches here are limited to make sure there's plenty of space and peace for everyone, so you may well find that your nearest neighbours are the cows, ponies and sheep that live on site. Being in the South Downs of course means that this place is in a good location for walks – you'll have good access to the South Downs Way and the Meon Valley Trail to get you started, and there are several pubs within walking distance too. There’s some lovely scenery around the area, but actually you won't have to stray far as the views over the Meon Valley from the site are pretty special (and the lack of light pollution also means that the night sky views can be spectacular). This is an eco-friendly site with sustainable values, so the facilities have been kept simple to have a minimal impact on the land. The essentials are in place though, in the form of compost toilets, showers and picnic tables, and you'll be allowed to bring a barbecue or start a campfire if you wish.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great views, easy to access from Southampton - first time camping so close to home meant we could get a pretty affordable taxi home (Uber covers this area!) Peaceful, very inquisitive cows in the field next door, plus sheep and horses as part of the working farm gave the site a lovely charm especially with the calves peering out from behind the toilet hut. Communal area was a nice touch with two fire pits. Composting toilet meant minimal smell, plus a shower and water point covers everything you need. Pitch / field in general was level with a very good clear view East and dappled shade in the West We came to watch the Perseids meteor shower as it's very close to Old Winchester Hill which is one of the dark sky conservation areas in Hampshire, and we got a great show. Hosts were friendly, responsive and accomodating!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We were after something quiet and in the countryside, with a shower and loo, the campsite provided that. Views lovely. Firepit was lovely. Shower great. It was good to see a happy family enjoying themselves too. Good local pubs and countryside & river walks. Excellent information and communication from owner.

Disliked: When we arrived we were disappointed. Barbed wire on high entrance gate was uninviting, hedge was overgrown too, grass too long, loads of prickly thistles in the grass and we almost turned back. Glad we did not as we enjoyed ourselves and the onsite facilities were absolutely fine. Some simple attention to cutting the grass (very wet feet in morning), cutting back the hedges and making the entrance more welcoming, sign perhaps? Tidying up the area around the shower (which was lovely) and WC, maybe a little post and rail fence around it would help make this a lovely little camp site. Good luck :)

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Quiet campsite with good view. Plenty of space and no designated pitches. Easy to find with what three words and good communication from the owner. Excellent pubs within 20 minutes walk.

Disliked: Could do with a slightly larger shower so that fresh cloths can be more easily taken, maybe make it a little bigger for a bench. This would also help parents with children.
