  • Wild camping-style pitches in the New Forest National Park
  • New Forest Wildlife Park and National Motor Museum 10 minutes' drive
  • Woodland walks from the site; half an hour's walk to Lyndhurst
Splendid seclusion and simplicity await for guests at Matley Wood Caravan and Camping Site – this New Forest campsite is a place where pitches are tucked away among ancient woodlands or in peaceful little open spaces. Whichever spot you opt for, you’ll be all set for a fabulous forest stay that’s all about embracing your spectacular natural surroundings. Getting a sense of the local landscapes might involve simply sitting quietly on your pitch to look out for wild ponies roaming, or heading out into the wilds on one of the walking/bike paths that runs from the campsite. Or, for a slightly different view of your Hampshire location, you may like to follow the half-hour walk to Lyndhurst, where you can reward your efforts with a restaurant meal or pint in the pub. Part of the draw of this location is its peaceful and secluded location, but it’s also a spot that’s well placed for all sorts of outings to places like the National Motor Museum or Paultons Park. And naturally, as this is the New Forest National Park there are lots of outdoor activities all around, including walks, bike rides, watersports and horse riding. Aiming to preserve the natural environment as much as possible, this site is a simple one that’s got a ‘wild camping’ sort of vibe to it. As such there are no toilets or showers, so you’ll need to bring your own chemical toilet (ideally with organic chemicals). You’ll also be asked to be mindful of the simple rules of the New Forest Code, which aims to keep wildlife, the environment and guests safe from harm.

Local attractions

Wildlife spotting is a real highlight for guests at Matley Wood – either seeing what you can spy from your pitch or a wander through the woods, or setting off to local animal attractions like the New Forest Reptile Centre (10 minutes’ drive) and Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary (15 minutes). For hands-on kids’ animal activities, head to Longdown Activity Farm (10 minutes), where they can get stuck into things like goat feeding, meet the pigs and alpacas and take tractor rides. Adults and teenagers might like to try the bird of prey experiences at Forest Falconry (20 minutes), while younger guests will be happier among the rides, animals and cartoon characters at Paultons Park, home of Peppa Pig World (20 minutes). Heading south towards the coast, it won’t take long to get to the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu (10 minutes) or to the historic village of Buckler’s Hard (15 minutes), where the maritime museum charts the story of the place where Nelson’s ships were built.

Liked: The location was great, nice and quiet and couldn't really hear the main road, secure with a padlocked gate. We had a dog with us to and she loved the wide open spaces.

Liked: The wild camping and horses roaming and walks all around. Site area was perfect.

Disliked: The completely rude staff. By the time we had been lectured and told everything we are not allowed to do and the glaring nasty faces from other older lady staff who yelled at us that for every twig there is a 1000 bugs we almost went home! For people that are lucky enough to work and live in the new forest they were miserable and rude. We were told not to let our dog off his lead, which we agree and respected our dog got injured due to a dog off the lead getting into our camp. We were told no camp fires/BBQ’s yet pitchup did not mention this on booking. We had no problem adhering to camp rules but the delivery of rules was very offensive 🥹very upsetting after a stressful week and long journey and trying to find site from instructions was difficult. Especially when nasty lady started calling us at 5.45 wanting to know where we were? We ended up in pond something and later told from the lecturing man even their post ends up there 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️ We found all campers were lovely welcoming people and we had a lovely visit on a quiet gorgeous site . Customer service welcoming service needs serious attention

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely, randomly spread pitches amongst the trees. Pitches are varied in slope, evenness and shading so have a good look around to choose your preference particularly if you need good solar. Can pull up van next to fresh water and elsan. Grey waste goes down elsan but you would need a long hose and pump or like us, a bucket. Drive over waste point available at sister site over the road for no extra charge. Very friendly and helpful site warden. Lovely walk into Lyndhurst a couple of miles.

Disliked: For us, no dislikes at all. Would definitely rebook.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Great location & in the forrest, pretty quiet, facilities for waste, chemical toilet disposal & fresh water. Bike rides from the site to the forrest, good location.

Disliked: Didn’t know when arriving at the gate to get in that you had to go to another site (Denny Wood) down the road to get a code to open the gate! This should in the booking confirmation as pretty dangerous waiting on the raid & not able to turn around!
