  • Family camping on a 63-acre Georgian estate just outside Lyndhurst
  • Beaulieu, Brockenhurst and Lymington within 20 minutes' drive
  • Central New Forest location easily accessed from the A337
Now, this is a nifty spot indeed for an outdoor break in the New Forest National Park. Foxlease Park is part of a Georgian estate on the outskirts of the village of Lyndhurst – an enviable location that’s pretty much right in the centre of the park’s 200 nature-packed square miles. Originally gifted to the girlguiding movement back in the 1920s (and still welcoming various groups to its residential and outdoor spaces), this 63-acre site is now home to a family campsite, with spacious pitches that are kept nicely safe and peaceful by having no vehicles in the camping fields (you’ll leave cars in a designated parking area next to the camping fields). Access here is fabulously simple, as the driveway is directly off the A337 (one of the main roads across the national park). That driveway is a fairly long one though, so you’ll be well sheltered from any passing traffic noise. Pitches have access to several bathroom blocks (with toilets and showers) around the fields, and there are designated bookable locations around the site for barbecues and campfires. For getting out and about, this Lyndhurst location is an excellent one for several reasons. You’ll be able to get into the centre of town on foot in around 15 minutes for pubs, cafés, takeaways and shops, and you’ll also be handily placed for all sorts of activities, whether your plans include walks, horse riding, watersports or visiting all the local family attractions. For easy outings, you can also get straight out onto forest trails from the estate for walks and bike rides.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (family)

Liked: The grounds were nice. Tent pegs went in with ease. Set close to Lyndhusrt and the new forest and beaches.

Disliked: Stayed 2 nights. £70.00 for the stay was far too much. Being single means being penalised on sites such as this. Although the site and field were nice the facilities are not suitable for adults. The toilets while clean were individual cubicals poorly lit and unheated, although fine during the day it was freezing at night. Same issue with the showers, warm water but freezing drying and dressing area between the shower and the latched door. Wash hand basin designed for year 1 & 2 year olds. bearly any space even to wet your tooth brush. No mirror provided either either making shaving difficult. Very few litter bins. Fire pits were available but charging another £10 for wood I decided to go with out.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (family)

Liked: Fantastic location, quiet and peaceful, excellent facilities, wide open spaces to pitch in.
Safe and secure as the gate is closed and locked, you are given the code so you can come and go as you please, it’s really not that difficult to open the gate.
Unlike mentioned in the other review, all the toilet/shower blocks DO have lighting, you just have to look for the light switch…

Disliked: Nothing!

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (family)

Liked: Loved the campfire, space and tranquility. Lovely to come back as a family (kids 9 and 12) to a site where I spent many happy times as a guide and guide leader. Crown and Stirrup is a lovely pub just up the hill from the gate. Good food and frequent live music. Having the wooden shelter available on site was great when it rained and it had a plug to charge your phone. The showers were nice and hot and the toilets were close. Site run by volunteers who were friendly and helpful.

Disliked: Be prepared to flatten some molehills with a mallet or bring an airbed.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (family)

Liked: We had a wonderful Easter camping trip to this beautiful site. The site is large and quiet, with lots of space to explore and play, and lots of wildlife to spot. The site is run by very friendly volunteers who were easy to contact at all times. The toilets and showers were very clean, and the shower was lovely and hot. The pitches had been rolled, so nice and level. Having the use of a shelter with electricity was useful for charging phones. The site is a great central location for exploring the New Forest.

Disliked: Nothing!

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (family)

Liked: Quiet campsite that is conveniently located for a walk into Lyndhurst and local heaths. Big grounds.

Disliked: I think the site is in new hands and has a few things that need to be addressed. It is also early in the season. I am not sure why the site is accessed by both a locked gate and a locked barrier. The code for the locks was supplied on check-in. The field we were put in was very lumpy. I think that it needs to be rolled. The toilet block didn't have lights and was basic. There was a shower block but we didn't try it.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We are always grateful to receive feedback to help us consider improvements to the site. It it helpful to know that the switches for lighting in the toilet and shower blocks are challenging to locate for some guests; we will look into whether these need some better labelling to avoid similar issues for future visitors. We wish you pleasant future stays wherever you choose to camp.

Local attractions

Lyndhurst is home to a visitor centre and museum that'll give you the lowdown on the forest's medieval roots and modern-day wildlife. Once clued up, set out for jaunts around Beaulieu (15 minutes' drive), Brockenhurst (10 minutes) or Fritham (20 minutes), each of which has handsome car-free trails and waymarked bike paths. Travel a tad further south for access to the spectacular Solent coast: shingly seaside vistas at Lepe Country Park (30 minutes) and Hurst Castle Spit (30 minutes) can be combined with harbourside strolls and salty lido swims in Lymington (20 minutes), where you can also board ferries over to the Isle of Wight (crossing time around 40 minutes). Bucklers Hard (20 minutes) and Exbury Gardens (25 minutes) are also lovely places to visit down towards the coast. For the big-ticket family days out, try the likes of the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu (15 minutes), the New Forest Wildlife Park (10 minutes), Liberty's Owl, Raptor & Reptile Centre (25 minutes) or Paultons Park, Home of Peppa Pig World (20 minutes).
