  • Luxury glampsite on a Hampshire farm in the South Downs National Park
  • Petersfield 10 minutes’ drive and Paultons Park 50 minutes
  • Bell tents with firepits, gas cookers and a communal barbecue lounge
Fancy escaping to the South Downs National Park for the weekend? Great Oaks Glamping, five minutes’ drive from Liss in Hampshire, makes a wonderful luxury break and is a doddle to get to, being an hour’s drive from London and a few minutes by car from the A3. With spectacular Downs views from a handful of smart bell tents in a 10-acre field, the site is on a working farm with all manner of livestock from cattle to Pygmy goats. You’re more than welcome to visit the farm during your stay, where kids can collect eggs, feed the animals and fuss over the friendly border terrier Ginny. Each bell tent is furnished with a king-size bed, and with the addition of camp beds sleeps up to five guests. Home comforts include vases of flowers, mirrors, rugs, cooking essentials and blankets for warmth. A modern shower block with lots of hot water is a few steps away from the pitches. Your private outside space comprises a firepit (one bag of wood supplied) and a gas cooker, and there’s also a covered, shared barbecue space. The owners will deliver breakfast hampers (the resident hens kindly donate their eggs) to your tent, while farm-produced burgers and sausages can be ordered for sizzling on the barbecue. In the evening, cuddle up around the firepit to soak up the Hampshire views while keeping an eye out for wildlife, or take a leisurely amble to one of the pubs within 40 minutes’ walk.

Local attractions

There are rambles through beech, ash and yew woodland to be had in Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve right from the pitches, and long-distance walkers can link up to the South Downs Way at Buriton (15 minutes’ drive). Hikers, cyclists and horse riders also have the option of joining the Shipwrights Way at Liss (five minutes). The historic town of Petersfield (10 minutes) has a lively market every Wednesday and Saturday in the central square, and you can also take the train from there to visit Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (40 minutes by rail) or catch the ferry from Southampton (50 minutes) to the Isle of Wight. For more slow-paced rail journeys, board the Watercress Line at Alton (25 minutes’ drive) to chug through Hampshire countryside behind a vintage steam engine. Ideas for family days out include a visit to Gilbert White’s House and Gardens (10 minutes), where kids can learn about the 18th-century naturalist through interactive exhibits, pond dipping and nature trails. Younger offspring will probably beg to spend the day at Paultons Park Home of Peppa Pig World (50 minutes) or feed the deer at Sky Park Farm (10 minutes).
