General

  • Luxury heated pods in the grounds of a South Downs manor hotel
  • Fitness centre on site with gym, sauna, hot tub, pool and steam room
  • Champagne and cocktail bar, sports bar and a Starbucks

Posh pods! You'll have a lushly luxurious time when pitching up in the pods at the Old Thorns Manor Hotel in the South Downs in Hampshire: all sorts including champagne are on tap in the hotel, and the pods are pretty pampering too…

All the pods in Old Thorns' well-maintained grounds sleep two adults in a double bed or twins, and have heating, a flatscreen TV and the means to make tea and coffee for when you're not downing champers in the bar. A dedicated shower and loo facility is near all the pods.

Stash your stuff and make your way over to the manor when you arrive for a pick of pampering options: all guests have access to the hotel facilities including the Elevation Sports and Fitness with 20-metre pool, gym, hot tub, sauna and steam room.

The Atrium Champagne (and cocktail) Bar has cosy leather chairs to sit back in and watch a black and white film while being served drinks by the experts: once you're properly relaxed, go for a session in the spa which has Decléor treatments such as manicures, pedicures and facials.

There's also a sports bar on site showing the latest from Sky Sports and serving food like burgers, ribs and pizzas, and a Starbucks with free wifi for leisurely coffees.

Finally, fancy some golf? A championship golf course set on over 400 acres is at the Old Thorns Manor Hotel too, officially opened by Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Isao Aoki and Bill Rogers.

Stayed here during the May Bank Holiday. There were group parties booked (different every night) which were quite noisy. Pods were amazing, had everything you need and lovely outside patio area. To make it perfect you might only need a small fridge. Mostly I would like to praise the shower facilities. I was really amazed that there were like separate shower rooms with toilets and basin. Cannot fault the cleanliness of the park. Healthiness center was very good, food and service also good in the Restaurant. Also, there is no wifi from the pods and really bad phone connection but we did not mind it.

    Disliked:

Chippings outside the pods! Every time a person walks it makes a horrible and annoying sound. Especially during the night toilet walks you can hear every step. Management should at least consider making a path with individual slabs, just to minimise the noise. Will only book next year if this is sorted because it is worse than having noisy neighbors.

The PODS are cosy, well equipped and an ideal alternative to camping. 14/04/2017

The POD was cosy, clean and well equipped. The staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. The hotel has an air of luxury but felt family friendly. Breakfast was excellent with all tastes catered for. The pool is fab.

    Disliked:

The POD had a few repair issues and the shower block though clean and easily accessible to the PODS again had a few repair issues (shower screen off its rollers).

The PODS are located to the rear of the hotel and there wasn't an easy way of accessing the hotel. We were told to come in and out of a champagne bar which was okay but one morning the door was locked and we had to take the long way.

The child options on the menu's are limited in the Sports bar and there wasn't an obvious area to sit away from the golfers and some of the colourful language used to describe near misses!

We did have a fabulous two nights and spent much of our time in the pool. I am not sure beyond that whether there is enough at the hotel for family entertainment but it may well be that the family market isn't the main target market.

The pod was fantastic, lovely and cosy and had everything we needed. The bathroom facilities were great, private bathrooms in a lovely block just a very short walk from the pod. Being able to use the hotel facilities made it a great stay, the pool, sauna, hot tub meant we had a relaxing chilled out break. The food in the sports bar was nice and the carvery we had on one night was fantastic. The staff were all so lovely and helpful and overall we would totally recommend The Thorns and will be staying again.

    Disliked:

We didn't dislike anything, we would however, suggest better signage around the hotel, the pod bathrooms needed a sign on the door and when we walked through the hotel it was hard to find certain places.

Local attractions

You'll find heaps to do in this part of Hampshire: Old Thorns Manor Hotel is in the South Downs National Park, so take a trail map and stride off into the scenery.

The National Trust-managed Hindhead Commons and the Devil's Punch Bowl is about five miles away from your posh pod, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Site of Special Scientific Interest blazing with floral colour in spring and summer.

There are plenty of paths of woodland and heathland to potter around, wild ponies to see and – importantly – plenty of places for picnics: climb Gibbet Hill, Surrey's second highest hill, for smashing views across the Weald.

A couple of museums are a few miles from base, the Hashmere Educational Museum within a mile and a half, and the Hollycombe Working Steam Museum about three miles away. Hashmere has galleries in geology, natural history and human history, and Hollycombe is worth puffing along to for a look at its steam fairground and miniature steam railways; it's the biggest traditional heritage fairground in Britain.

Within 12 or so miles of base, twitchers can visit Bird World, Britain's biggest bird park with 26 acres of aviaries; the art collection and country house at Petworth Park; Chichester Cathedral and Jane Austen’s House Museum. Chessington World of Adventures and Thorpe Park are about an hour's drive away for thrillseekers and animal aficionados.
