Camping site

  • Peaceful site in a hamlet on the edge of a traditional village
  • A 10-minute drive to Fordingbridge and the New Forest National Park
  • Half a mile to the local pub via a footpath; walkers' paradise
Getting back to basics is the aim of the game at Cae Malwen Farm, made up of grassy paddocks set in a small hamlet on the edges of the traditional English village of Rockbourne. Attractions and activities at this Hampshire park are focused on its natural surroundings, with peaceful vibes boosted by a no-noise policy after dark and the facilities extending to toilets and two showers. Local walks are easily accessed too at this site in the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the network of footpaths snaking through the surrounding countryside. A row of thatched cottages following the line of the river flowing through the valley is a minute's stroll from the site too and a pub serving food and booze is a short saunter away. If you fancy bringing a bit of decadence to the hol by dining out for every meal, a couple of other inns are in the villages of Damerham and Whitsbury, both about a five-minute drive or under a 45-minute walk via a car-free trail. Restaurants are in Fordingbridge just on the outskirts of the New Forest National Park (10 minutes’ drive), along with a cinema, a park on the Avon and a supermarket. To source food nearer the park, a village shop’s at Sandleheath a five-minute drive away: bag supplies for the barbecue and cook them up while you get toasty by one of the site’s firepits (with logs available to buy on base).

Liked: Everything, it was quiet and relaxing, owners were really nice, best toilet and shower facilities I have seen on a campsite, honestly cannot recommend enough, no Wi-Fi but who wants that when they are camping anyway (but have put 5stars as I don’t want to downgrade anything) :)

Disliked: Nothing, absolutly nothing

Liked: Had an amazing bank holiday weekend here, site was clean and well maintained. The toilets were deceivingly nice, from the outside they looked rustic but inside was a full flushing toilet Plenty of space in the middle that allowed my son to happily play with all the other kids while being safe and in view at all times, was really great to see him have a great time and make friends and memories. There is a very nice walk on public footpaths direct from site that can be tailored to many different lengths, we took a short walk with the dog and enjoyed the local views. A check out time of 4pm meant that I didn't feel any pressure to rush to pack things up the night before meaning I could enjoy the short break to the max, gave breakfast and slowly start to pack up in the heat. All over a wonderful site, run by people that put the effort in to make a nice environment

Disliked: The only dislike is, out of anyone's control but, the site is on a hill

Liked: Lovely little campsite in a peaceful area. Toilets and showers were extremely clean and toiletries provided were a very nice touch.

Disliked: Would be good to have some more bathrooms when it is busy such as at a bank holiday weekend.

Liked: Lots of space, really clean flushing toilets, nice showers, spacious washing up facilities, friendly campers, friendly owners, logs available to purchase and free use of fire pits, fairy lights in the trees at night, peaceful and relaxing vibes, set in a picturesque village with lots to do nearby.

Liked: It was so peaceful here and we enjoyed a nice spot where we were not crowded. We even got some logs and borrowed a fire pit. The toilets/showers have toiletries in them and the washing up area has sponges etc. Because it's not in a really built up area we did some stargazing. There is also a really nice village pub a short walk away.

Disliked: The only problems we had were when the site is busy you have to queue for the toilets and there is no hot water for washing up. Phone reception wasn't great but that didn't really bother us.

Liked: Simply wonderful site. Quiet, great facilities and run by a lovely couple. super pub within walking distance, and Fordingbridge is close and well supplied enough to do any top-ups. Decent co-op and good local butcher. We really enjoyed ourselves and will go back as soon as we can.

Paddock non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lots of space for the kids to let off steam. Very quiet at night. Use of fire pits. Minimal interference from owners (who were very welcoming), but generally available for any problems. Toiletries in the bathroom/ toilet really thoughtful and much appreciated! Peaceful and relaxed.

Disliked: Could do with a sink in the toilet to wash hands. Also hand towel to dry hands after washing.

Local attractions

Stonehenge is within a half an hour drive's and other historical places of interest are close by – including the Rockbourne Roman Villa Museum just 15 minutes’ walk away. Breamore House (10 minutes) is a prime place if you prefer your outings to include a glimpse of a country pile’s stately paintings and furniture, while the New Forest Water Park (15 minutes) has modern facilities like a wakeboarding centre and inflatable aqua park as well as places to kayak using the available equipment. For swimming instead of SUP-ing, the sandy sweep of Bournemouth beach is 35 minutes south and is reachable on a scenic journey that goes through the lush green Moors Valley Country Park & Forest. If you’d rather stick to the area’s old-school offerings, Salisbury and its spectacular cathedral are about 20 minutes’ drive away and the ancient town of Ringwood with a weekly market dating back to the Middle Ages takes 25 minutes to reach. And of course, there’s not much in the area more ancient than the New Forest, created by William I in about 1079 for royal hunts...
