Embrace the practice of forest-bathing at Rookesbury Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, on the edge of the Forest of Bere (and about 25 minutes’ drive from Portsmouth). The route into this Hampshire site sets the scene for your stay, with tall trees, lush hedges and spectacular parkland all around. You might also encounter the occasional horse rider along the access road (Hundred Acres Road), so be aware and slow down accordingly. This is a great spot for families: a play area with swings, slides and climbing frames sits on a well-maintained lawn that seems to be made for relaxed picnics. And if your child is of the four-legged variety, you may be pleased to hear there’s a dog park, too. Dogs are also welcome on the trails of the Forest of Bere (though best kept on a lead to prevent them from disturbing ground nests) and at Botley Woods (20 minutes' drive), an area of conifer trees where you might hear birdsong and spot rare butterflies. This site is managed by the Caravan and Motorhome Club, and it’s open to members and non-members alike. Members enjoy special rates (the price displayed), whereas non-members will need to pay the £15/night extra or buy a £69 membership. A membership is an excellent deal if you’re likely to spend more than four nights at a Club site over the year, since it brings discounts at more than 140 UK sites, plus other perks like access to tailored caravan/motorhome insurance, discounts on days out and savings on top brands.

Local attractions

You might head to the village of Wickham (15 minutes’ drive) for your groceries, a family meal or a night at the pub. But it’s well worth having a closer look around this historic spot on the River Meon. Search for antiques at the Chesapeake Mill, stroll around the lush Wickham Water Meadows or hike the Meon Valley Trail. It’s easy to spend the entire day at Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard (25 minutes), home of the Mary Rose Museum (devoted to a Tudor ship that sank in the Solent in 1545) and HMS Victory, Lord Nelson’s ship at the Battle of Trafalgar. There’s also the vertiginous Spinnaker Tower, with views all the way to the Isle of Wight. The site is at the south-western tip of the South Downs National Park. This sprawling area includes the Queen Elizabeth Country Park (35 minutes), which has hiking and cycling trails, play areas and wildflower meadows, butterflies and expansive views at Butser Hill.
