  • Peaceful wildlife haven on a farm in the Hampshire countryside
  • A 10-minute drive to Winchester and 20 minutes to the New Forest
  • On-site van serving food, with pubs and outdoor activities nearby
Want to meet both farm animals and wild ones on your holiday? Take a break at Springbridge Farm, a peaceful, friendly farm site just next to the River Itchen, surrounded by the wildlife of the Hampshire countryside. If the farm’s collection of friendly sheep and chickens aren’t enough, guests can get up close to nature by spotting water voles in the river or rare insects hiding in corners of the countryside. Within a 10-minute drive of Winchester and 20 minutes of the New Forest, this site is also well-placed for those looking to fill their days with fresh-air activities. For starters, any guests itching to take on the local terrain by foot or bicycle can join the Itchen Way footpath directly from the site. This 30-mile route follows the river all the way from Southampton to Winchester, with plenty of opportunities to rest and dip your feet in the water along the way (and if you stay still enough, you may spot some salmon on the way…) With more opportunities to cycle or hike in the moors and woodland of the New Forest, 20 minutes away, you'll need plenty of energy – so it's handy that there are several pubs serving substantial meals or real ales within a 10-minute drive. There are also several supermarkets and farm shops within 10 minutes of the site to stock up on essentials, and an on-site food van with hot food and drinks for those who've run out of energy to create their own.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Good location - flat, large pitches, stream at edge of campsite. Basic, low cost camping site. Could be a gem with a little thought (not even that much money spending) and some TLC.

Disliked: Not clear how to get in on arrival. Gate padlocked - no instructions. Entrance and toilet block run down - with piles of wood/junk around - not very welcoming. Toilets very very basic (we were expecting basic) but no hot water at all and pot-luck whether cold tap working. Toilets cleaned and stocked when we arrived Saturday - but nothing for rest of weekend (except new liquid soaps - which was very bizarre). Wouldn't have taken a lot to empty bins, sweep/mop floor and replenish toilet rolls. 1 car to be left on site and (even tho we had said were removing second vehicle away from camp were pounced upon when returned with camping kit after a Go Outdoors visit. £5 for extra car per night - if wanted to leave by entrance (very limited room and not secure). Apparently the one car per pitch is a constraint placed by the owner's insurance. No shop - tho was one advertised on info.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: If your looking for somewhere basic then this is ideal, very cheap and clean. There’s a river at one end of the field so great for kids wanting a splash (shallow) and a path to go for a walk.I think a better sign displaying “Springbridge campsite” would be very helpful and more info on what to do at arrival as we arrived to 2 closed gates and wasn’t sure if we were at the right place

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We loved the lake and walk. The man who owned the site was helpful.

Disliked: On our last night there was a group of about 10 teenager boys, running around shouting swearing and riding a motorcycle till about 2 in the morning. We did not feel safe letting out teenage daughters go to the toilet on own and only got about 4 hours sleep before we had to be up to pack away. When we asked one lad if they lived there he said yes then went of and carried on. Would only stay again if this was not to happen.

Local attractions

Get rooted in nature in the moors and glades of the New Forest (20 minutes' drive), where there are a whole bunch of activities from archery and bushcraft to horse riding and kayaking. Closer to home, cyclists and hikers can hop directly from the site onto the 30-mile Itchen Way footpath, which snakes along the River Itchen. For more close encounters with animals, try Marwell Zoo (10 minutes), where snow leopards and Amur tigers prowl in 140 acres of grounds. You may also like to try the family-friendly theme park at Paultons Park (20 minutes), where kids under one metre go free and there are rides for every member of the family. Once you’re done with the rural views, swap in the dirt tracks for the stonier paths in Winchester, where you can stock up on local ales and gin in its many souvenir shops. A 10-minute drive away, the city's cathedral whisks you back into a pious medieval Britain. Alternatively, for something more prehistoric, the iconic landmark of Stonehenge (45 minutes) is one of the greatest mysteries you can uncover in the area.
