  • Peaceful off-grid Hampshire site with South Downs views
  • Marwell Zoo 15 minutes' walk away; 15 minutes' drive to Winchester
  • Four acres of countryside and natural habitats; bushcraft activities
Guests from all over the UK, Europe and the US have been to Morelands Copse Camping – with many leaving rave reviews calling the place ‘magical’ or ‘pure heaven’. Several have even ended up staying for longer than they planned, or quickly returning… So what is it about this place that inspires such enthusiasm? Well, the location’s a pretty good start – it has four acres of secluded and private Hampshire countryside to its name, with views over Hensting Valley and the South Downs National Park. Stunning sunsets are also common. There’s a real emphasis on preserving natural habitats here – the grounds are made up of an open field next to wildflower meadows and ancient woodlands, and nearly a kilometre of native hedgerows have been planted to create new wildlife habitats too. All of this provides an ever-changing backdrop of colour throughout the season, but one constant is the lack of light pollution that allows for some stunning stargazing on clear nights. The site is off grid and low impact, but it does have some essential facilities including portable toilets and a rather fun Wrigley tin shower with a bucket on a pulley for that real wild camping vibe. There’s also an honesty shop for gas and a few other bits and bobs – other supplies can be picked up in either Eastleigh or Winchester, both of which are about 15 minutes’ drive away. A number of activities are available on site, including bushcraft (willow weaving, learning to build a den and foraging) and arts and crafts using the supplies and materials provided in the crafts den. Alternatively, you might like to take a walk to one of the local pubs for a meal and a couple of drinks – there are two lovely options within 20 minutes’ stroll. The closest bus stop is only 15 minutes' walk away too.

Bell tent

Liked: We stayed in the two bell tents in the ‘secret garden’ for a birthday camp out. The pitch was magical, the woods were full of bluebells and we had a wonderful time. Very peaceful, very child friendly (and properly off grid). Dan was so helpful and friendly. We loved the communal camp kitchen and the campfire… and we’ll be coming back again.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: Hands down the best campsite We have ever stayed at. Was the first time camping for my friends and this place now their minds. It was a little slice of heaven, felt like we were just in the middle of the woods, so peaceful and allowed us all tp shut off from the world. The woodlands were filled with incredible quirks particularly the wiggly Tinned shower - this truly felt incredibly (was in a heat wave so helped).

Disliked: Only one thing that would of improved our stay was a better toilet situation however this did not affect how much we loved the place.

From the manager: So pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. Unfortunately we cannot put any other permanent toilets due to being on the Southdowns We look forward to seeing you again Kind regards

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: The attention to detail, the Honesty shop, the kitchen and materials provided for Children. Safety and being/feeling secure! Answered any questions and answered the phone first time if we needed anything! Large pitches! (Forest) Wonderful cause!

Disliked: Difficulty finding initially and confusion what to do when arrive but dont let this out you off! Even though it clearly states around site to take your rubbish home with you some inconsiderate campers had filled the wheel borrows and the area around them with bags full of rubbish and we were unable to use the provided wheel borrows for our ease.

The Pig camping pod

Liked: Enjoyed the quirky PigHut and the communal area. The freedom from the usual surroundings was great. The location and outdoor living was a real break from the traditional camping.

Disliked: The owners took money for fire wood kit that they never delivered even after repeatedly emailing and leaving voicemails. Also the on-site toilets were not once cleaned or refilled for soap during our entire 3 day stay. This may be an off-grid experience but basic cleaning of the facility’s should be carried out.

From the manager: We are sorry to hear your experience with us was not enjoyable. We had firewood available it was by the entrance to the field gate, I don’t believe other campers had problems finding it . We are happy to refund, please forward your bank details. The toilets were cleaned twice daily , had you let us know we would certainly have cleaned them again. We are pleased you liked the pig hut and lounge area and enjoyed the surroundings. Please message or ring me . Regards Kerie Founder and trustee

Non-electric grass tent pitch (ten person)

Liked: The large field was great with only us on it! The woodland land was amazing with lots of board games to borrow a lovely area to sit and eat or have a campfire. We held my granddaughters 5th birthday party in the woods and the barn area and it was amazing.

Disliked: Thought it was a little overpriced as the toilet facilities were basic.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We are so pleased you enjoyed all the lovely different facilities and extras available. As we are off grid we can only offer basic toilets but we do ensure they are clean . Hope to see you all again. Kind regards

Local attractions

There’s a lot of fun to be had simply knocking about on site – the site is fenced so kids can play and dogs can sniff about safely. That said, this is also a great area for outings, and one of the best is very close by: the excellent Marwell Zoo, which you can reach with a 15-minute walk or five-minute drive for a day among the giraffes, tigers and hippos. This location on the edge of the South Downs National Park also clearly lends itself to walks, bike rides and other outdoor activities – and there’s more of all that in the nearby New Forest National Park (20 minutes’ drive) too. For a complete change of scenery, you might instead fancy city strolls in either historic Winchester (15 minutes) or down in Southampton (25 minutes), where both Solent Sky and SeaCity Museum are handy rainy-day options.
