Hankering after hols in Hampshire’s New Forest National Park? Keen beans should make for Forest Green, a quiet family-friendly spot on a working farm with a large flat field bordered by heaths, woods and a nature reserve. This remote and basic place is a couple of miles’ walk through the countryside from Pilley and four miles from Brockenhurst, which has a train station (hello eco-friendly trips on public transport), and is home to wild deer that pass through day and night. Wander out the gate or over the style to skip through heathland thick with gorse. A footpath goes back through the farm, but the rest of the area leads off to walks in any direction. With streams to play in, ponies to track and general explores to be embarked on, kids are fans of the freedom at this place. Tiddlers are also taken by the popular Paultons Park, Home of Peppa Pig World (35 minutes). Make a break for Lymington’s old town quay for boat rides, kayaking and the sea wall coastal walk (20 minutes) too, or meander around Moors Valley Country Park & Forest, stopping at the excellent play equipment or riding on the cycling trails. Please note that the park does not allow noise after 8pm, and it has no toilet or shower facilities so you'll need to bring your own. Dogs must not be taken off-leash unless they can stay at heel.

Route directions

Come along Church Lane with the church on your left, and continue on the tarmac road through the dip. As you come out of the dip, turn left onto a gravel track, passing a farm on your right. Take the next right to Greenmoor (past the brown sign saying Private Access Only). Carry on the track for about half a mile. As the track forks left, keep right and you'll drive into the farmyard and see a white caravan. Park there and toot the horn to alert Steven the farmer.
