  • Peaceful site surrounded by lakes, on the edge of the New Forest
  • Bookable activities including high ropes, climbing and abseiling
  • Play area, table tennis, café and shop; toilet blocks with hot showers
Set up camp for a night or several at Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Activity Centre and Campsite set in 65 acres in the New Forest, for guaranteed busy days among a wide range of forest adventures. Among the outdoor adventures and field study activities here (which must be booked in advance and are subject to availability), you can try high and low ropes, climbing and abseiling, archery, zipwire and heaps more under the eyes of its experienced instructors – or take yourself off under your own guidance for orienteering, treasure hunting, mountain biking and fishing in its lush surrounding lakes.... Happily, a café serving the likes of jacket potatoes, paninis etc is here too so that adventurers don't have far to forage when it comes to light bites, and if you need a day off from all the action the site also has a play area and free wifi. (Table tennis and kid-sized bouldering walls are around too if you really can't help yourself...) The several amenities blocks are well equipped with a toilet block with hot showers, a baby-changing room and washing-up facilities. A small shop is to hand for basic supplies, but both Bransgore and Burley are only two miles away if you need anything else – maybe see how fast you can run there and back...?

What customers say

Avon Tyrrell offers a beautiful New Forest setting with abundant outdoor activities, highly praised by families. Visitors highlight the friendly staff, spacious pitches, and excellent facilities, including clean toilets and hot showers. While the abundance of activities is a major draw, some guests found them pricey or difficult to book. Minor drawbacks include occasional noise from planes and other campers, and some report facilities needing more frequent cleaning or could be improved. Overall, it's a highly recommended, family-friendly site with a strong focus on outdoor adventure.

Electric grass pitch (lake view, no pets)

Liked Nice space, great activities, bike rides, staff are lovely, everything you need is there for the family.

Disliked If they could fix the football pitch/court to the side of the main building it’d be perfect.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (forest, pet friendly)

Liked Big sized pitches, you can definitely fit 2 tents and a car if you wanted! Nice location in the forest and nice short walking trails around. There is a cute cafe which serves basic coffees, croissants, pizzas. The food was just ok, not amazing.

Disliked The forest part of the campsite needs an update. There are very few toilets/showers for the amount of pitches and facilities are ok but not that clean. No lights at the washing up station so it was difficult in the dark. The sports courts are tired and a bit broken. The kids play area nearest to us was also a bit broken but there were other areas around to access so it didn't matter too much. Finally, the site is underneath a flight path so there are very low flying planes disturbing the peace, including at night.

Electric grass and earth tent pitch (no pets, woodland)

Liked Great campsite with lots to do especially the activities and firepit.

Disliked Showers and toilets weren't particularly clean and found shop prices quite expensive. Also be aware airport is close with planes flying late at night.

Electric grass pitch (lake view, no pets)

Liked The pitches are large and everyone was respectful of the curfew times for being quiet. The bike trails are great.
Staff are friendly and helpful. We’ve been coming for the last 10 years and will be returning again.

Disliked The lack of signage warning that they are i by bike trails. We saw 2 large families on the red bike trail and it could have been messy.
Shop could be better stocked but it had the essentials and plenty of ice which was a saviour!

Non-electric grass pitch (lake view, no pets)

Liked We stayed over the bank holiday weekend which was full but it didn’t feel over busy and there was still plenty of space for kids to play , it felt safe for kids to be at the park. Activities we did the people running them were amazing , encouraging and fun. The cafe and shop were very reasonably priced too. Yes there were aeroplanes going over quite low but kids thought it good to see and there was none at night.

Disliked The showers and toilets were dated and male and female together but they were clean and cleaned at least 3x a day.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (forest, pet friendly)

Liked The staff were so lovely and accommodating and flexible of our changing plans too!
This was right in the New Forest with walks right on your doorstep. Amazing!
The clean site and lovely atmosphere. The facilities were brilliant. Lots to do! Brilliant adventure activities and loved the giant chess as well. We also loved the fact we were camping within part of a wood and loved those trees in particular (Scott’s Pine?). There was an additional part to the campsite that we hadn’t known about until walking down to the small lake and seeing it - it had little shade but seemed full of families which was nice and also had a park by it similar to our campsite.

Disliked Nothing about the site itself but the overflying planes can be loud (not during the night though).

Local attractions

Several bike tracks start directly from the site, so pack a picnic and head off into the New Forest to find your own adventure – perhaps you might fancy a pedal to the Dorset and Hampshire beaches of Christchurch, Mideford, Southbourne or Highcliffe...? The sands of Bournemouth are about 10 miles away. Around the New Forest, the many places to see include the New Forest Wildlife Park in Southampton, an ancient natural woodland and wildlife haven (look out for otters and owls); the award-winning National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, and Liberty's Owl, Raptor and Reptile Centre at Ringwood. Pipsqeaks have the home of Peppa Pig World at Paultons Family Theme Park 30 minutes away for actively exciting day out, as well as the hands-on activities and indoor and outdoor play areas of Longdown Dairy Farm in Southampton and the Dinosaur Museum in Dorchester. Naturally, they might like trekking with a New Forest pony too.
