If stargazing on site has given you a taste for all things celestial, head to Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium (10 minutes’ drive) for a full-dome film show about the night sky. Wannabe astronauts can see fragments of meteorites here and find out cool facts about being in space. In Winchester (15 minutes), check out the spectacular medieval cathedral, which fuses Norman and Gothic elements – it took more than four centuries to build, during which time architectural styles evolved. Winchester City Mill, a National Trust site, is a small corner of nature in the city, and a place where you might spot kingfishers and otters. For more animals – this time bigger and more exotic – Marwell Zoo (15 minutes) is a popular day out. Attractions at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (45 minutes) include the Mary Rose, a 16th-century vessel that sank in the Solent in 1545 and was raised again only four centuries later, and HMS Victory, Lord Nelson’s flagship during the Battle of Trafalgar.
