  • Peaceful adults-only site two miles from the River Blackwater
  • Dengie National Nature Reserve 15 minutes’ drive; Maldon 20 minutes
  • Attached to a traditional country pub that serves food and drinks
Surrounded by arable land and grazing fields dotted with sheep, The Star Inn Caravan Park on Essex’s Dengie Hundred Peninsula is a place with a truly peaceful vibe. The River Blackwater flows about two miles north of here, which makes the site popular with members of the Marconi and Stone sailing clubs (both about five minutes’ drive away). There are more sailing clubs on the River Crouch (15 minutes’ drive to the south) – so it's clearly something of a special area for watersports types. There are a few other big draws at this rural site. Firstly, it's set up for adults only. Secondly, it welcomes your canine buddy, so you don’t have to worry about booking boarding kennels before your holiday. Thirdly, for those who like their hikes on the long side, the 45-mile St Peter’s Way runs along the main road just outside. To add to all of that, it’s also just next to The Star Inn, a traditional country pub that serves food and drinks seven days a week and hosts events throughout the high season. Maldon, an ancient town with a riverside park and interesting attractions, including the Combined Military Services Museum, is a 20 minutes’ drive away. Well-maintained facilities on site include shared showers, toilets and a chemical disposal point.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Clean site with lots of open space. New toilet block.
WiFi was good.

Disliked Entry is through a gate with combination lock. Means you have to get out, secure the gate open, drive through and get out again to close gate.
Website says pub open 7 days a week but isn’t open Sunday evenings.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Good sized pitch overlooking a harvested arable field. Compared to other sites I looked at for the same dates, the Star Inn was great value for the facilities offered.
Modern amenities inc showers. This site would be a great base for a few days spend visiting the area. A nice touch was the suggested walking route from the site which takes in the nearby Blackwater Estuary and views of Osea Island. There's free WiFi but I didn't need it as I had great phone signal in the area.

Disliked I didn't know the pub wasn't serving any food until I checked in. Wasn't a big deal as I had brought my own food, but combined with the absence of any shops in Steeple itself means it's best to come prepared.
Didn't ask, but would be useful to be able to purchase essentials or soft drinks/snacks to save having to ride somewhere else.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Large hardstanding pitch on a large well maintained field which was very peaceful, until a curious pidgin started stomping up and down the caravan roof with his bob nailed boots on which was rather amusing at the time! Toilet and shower facilities were very clean, tidy and modern, shower was great until someone flushed the toilet and then the shower briefly became a dribble. I got a banging Wi-Fi signal even being half way up the field (Plot 36). I think they must have a booster but signal was great. There is an on site pub but never got to try the food because the kitchen was closed Monday evening and had to go elsewhere. This long weekend was meant to be down time for me and hubby, just as well as there is not much to do locally. I could not find a local boot sale, but luckily there was a classic car and steam show on Sunday, a very short walk from the site, but believe it is every 3rd Sunday of the month.

Disliked My only fault was for an adult only site I did see kids running up and down the camp site on Sunday afternoon.
While staying we went to Bradwell Marina for lunch. Food was good, thought £5.50 for chips was a little cheeky then got 4 slices of garlic bread which was also £5.50. Wasps were a big issue for me and ultimately they chased me away from the venue. Shame as it was very nice sitting in the sun looking at all the boats.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked We have stayed here many times over the last few years, friendly staff lovely clean site, easy check in, lovely pub great reasonably priced food, live music, which we booked in advance this time to go and see one of their regular bands!

Disliked Unfortunately this time was not as perfect. Showers were scaled and the mop just about had thread on it, toilet brushes were dirty and need replacing. We found glass around our pitch. On the first night the caravan a few pitches up was playing their music quite loud which started at 630 pm, not wishing to spoil a lovely afternoon, it did not bother us. At 915 when it was still going and had increased in volume, I called the pub and a man said he would come over and take a look. At 945 their music was still going so I called the pub again and I was told that he could hear music from the gate and it was background music! I asked him how can it be background music if I can hear it in my caravan 3 pitches down! He reluctantly must of come over as the music went down. It eventually went off at 1030. We have never had this problem here before and it tainted our stay. I looked up the policy of the site and it clearly states quiet times after 730! Their dog was also running around the whole of their stay, nothing was said and he must of seen it

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked It’s a lovely, medium-sized site of about 40 pitches with lots of room to camp AND manoeuvre. It is well kept and with everything you need. Didn’t use the showers etc as we are self-sufficient there in a motorhome, but checked out the loos and shower & washing up area, just to see what it was like and it was all nice and clean.
The managing/adjoining pub is very nice and dog friendly with good food available & occasional visiting bands.
The site itself is spacious and there are nice walks very close by too.
We had a lovely stay.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

Local attractions

The area of tidal mudflats between the estuaries of the Blackwater and Crouch is home to Dengie National Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ drive). Birdwatchers flock to this Site of Special Scientific Interest to spot dunlins, oystercatchers and curlews, plus wintering populations of Brent geese. Established in 1916, the Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome (20 minutes) played a key defensive role during World War I. Today, it still has several original buildings from that tumultuous time, as well as a collection of WWI aircraft and a lively programme of reenactments. If history is your thing, it's likely you'll also appreciate Mangapps Railway & Museum (10 minutes) and St Peters Chapel (15 minutes), the oldest church in England. For a day surrounded by plants and blossoms, head to RHS Garden Hyde Hall (20 minutes), where themed areas present vegetation from different parts of the world, including Australasia. There's also an interesting Dry Garden planted with drought-tolerant plants and a bird hide overlooking a reservoir inhabited by herons and cormorants. Enrol in a tour or tasting at Crouch Ridge Vineyard (10 minutes) or the New Hall Wine Estate (15 minutes, and on cellar door days) too.
