  • Family-run Essex site on the banks of a 68-acre lake
  • Playground and picnic areas on site, plus waterside café
  • Five minutes' drive from the village and pubs of Halstead
Laze by the lake at this luscious leisure park, a private and family-run site in rural Essex. Gosfield Lake Resort, five minutes' drive from the village of Halstead, is surrounded by fields and woods and set up for families to have fine outdoor times; in the evenings, as the sun sets over the 68-acre lake, a fab array of birdlife can be seen feeding and settling down for the night – who needs a TV when there's this amount of natural entertainment…? You will need food though – and you're welcome to barbecue your bangers (as long as barbecues are off the ground and you don't harm the grass) at the many lakeside picnic spots. Alternatively, there's also a great menu on offer in the adjoining café overlooking the water. The simple but well-kept amenities on site include a launderette, a washing-up area, toilets and hot showers, and if you're staying with kids you'll no doubt note the playground, sandpit and family washrooms too.

What customers say

Gosfield Lake Resort boasts a beautiful lakeside setting with stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere. Visitors praise the friendly staff, clean and well-maintained welfare facilities, and excellent play area. Amenities like the Apple Tree restaurant and snack shack are popular. Some guests found pitches and facilities a long walk from their camping spots, and WiFi availability was inconsistent. Occasional noise from other guests was noted, though management offered solutions. The lake itself is primarily for water sports, not general swimming.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Returned to Gosfield for a second time now. Location is beautiful, pitches are clean, well maintained and quiet. Good play area for the kids and the Apple Tree restaurant is a lovely spot for dinner and is very conveniently located on the edge of site. There is also a breakfast/lunch spot on site adjacent to the lake which makes for a nice spot to look out. Welfare facilities are clean and tidy and all you need.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely campsite with amazing views across the lake. Friendly staff and very clean and nice facilities. Would highly recommend!

Disliked It would be great if the lake was accessible to use e.g. to rent kayaks etc, as currently it appears to be only for jet skiers which is quite loud.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked This was the perfect break away from reality. It was so peaceful and calming for the soul. The wildlife early morning is spectacular!

Disliked There was nothing to dislike! Although given the weather was hitting 30°c I'd have loved nothing more than a dip in the lake. An hour time slot for swimming in extreme heats would have made this short stay beyond perfect 👌

Liked Camped here on a Sunday on the hottest day, but under the trees, and with a cool breeze off the lake it was lovely. Good facilities. Very tranquil, though could be busier during the day with lake visitors

Local attractions

The village of Halstead is a five-minute drive away; a pretty spot with a couple of fine old pubs (and grub) and supermarkets for stocking up. Just outside the village, Broaks Wood is a fab 62-acre ancient woodland site that's been around since the last Ice Age: wander the trails spotting wildflowers, bats and newts. You're well placed to link up with the Essex Way for bigger walks – it stretches from Epping Forest to the coast at Harwich but you're under no obligation to do the lot. Walkable sections give you a flavour of what this excellent eastern county has to offer, from thick forests to river valleys, old churchyards and leafy lanes. Between the villages of Bures (30 minutes) and Manningtree (50 minutes), there's also Dedham Vale, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the banks of the River Stour. There are excellent bike trails and footpaths through the area, and at every turn a scene that Constable could have painted (and many that he did). For a contrast to all that rural peace, head an hour or so to Clacton-upon-Sea for traditional beachside jollies. Jellied eels on the pier, rides at the funfair, poking round the rockpools with a net on a stick… old-school seaside shenanigans are still a hoot in these glitzy modern times.
