  • Rural location on the edge of a village within easy reach of London
  • A 10-minute drive to Maldon; 15 minutes to RHS Garden Hyde Hall
  • Wine tasting 200 metres away and a historic pub 10 minutes' walk away
Escaping to the Essex countryside means different things to different people. For some folk it’s a chance to take it easy – visiting gardens, taking gentle strolls to the local pub and seeking out cute little tea rooms – while for others it’s all about packing days full of activities like wild swimming, canoeing and long bike rides. One thing that surely links together all guests at Novoli Farm, though, is time spent in the gorgeous Essex countryside looking out over the lovely vineyard views and Blackwater estuary (from the top of the hill). Feel free to also pop down to New Hall Vineyards, 200 metres away, for a tasting should you wish to experience the vines more closely. Prefer a pint of beer? No problem – this site is on the edge of the village of Purleigh, about 10 minutes’ walk from the village pub (and the shop, where you can pick up supplies for your picnics and barbecue evenings). There’s also a bus stop in the village for services to the riverside town of Maldon, and the site is just next to the 45-mile St Peter’s Way footpath – so you’ll have options for getting around if you don’t fancy driving. This peaceful spot is an adults-only setup, but dogs are permitted. Things have been kept fairly simple on the grass pitches, but guests do have access to basic, mains-connected toilet facilities and mains water (please note that there are no showers, however).

Non-electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The site was well equipped for one night and it's location near a lovely walk next through a vineyard to the village pub was perfect

Disliked: The road nearby was quite busy and obviously there was no shower facility bit that was already advised in advance.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Great communication before and during stay. Antony was very accommodating with requests and knowledge of local area. Site has a lovely walk through a gate onto a vineyard to the local pub the Purleigh Bell . Lovely old pub and very friendly. Purleigh community shop had everything you needed and more to stock up for your stay . Again very welcoming and friendly. Had EHU and flushing toilet to use . Also a cold water washing up unit .

Disliked: New guests turning up at 11.30am when it clearly states on imformation check in is 2pm . We had arranged with Antony to stay a little later on plot till 12 /1pm as new guests should not have arrived till 2pm . Obviously this is completely out of Antony's control.

From the manager: Dear Paula, Many thanks for the glowing review and we hope to see you again, at some stage. Kind regards Anthony

Non-electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: We stayed for two nights and it is a perfect site for us, basic, campfire and a pub you can walk to in 15 minutes with excellent views on top of the hill. Anthony was very accommodating, my husband needed to go to hospital and Anthony drove my husband to the hospital and then checked in on us the next morning, we were very grateful, we will go back.

From the manager: Dear Kyla, Many thanks for the review. I very much hope that your husband is on the mend and hope to see you both again. Kind regards Anthony

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Quiet site. Nice walk up the hill and along to the local pub. Also a well stocked community shop around the corner.

Disliked: First impression is a high gate which it completely boarded so you can't see through it. Chain and combination padlock fixed to the top of the gates which means that you have to have your arms stretched up to reach the padlock while turning the numbers. You would not be able to do this if you were less than 5'4" Drinking water tap is next to the tap over the Elsen point. Spiggot on drinking water tap was broken so could not fix a hose. Tap over Elsen point sprayed water everywhere when pushed on. Wouldn't cost too much to fix these issues and would then be a nice site.

From the manager: Hi John, Many thanks for taking the time to review and glad that you enjoyed the quiet location and wonderful walks and pub. I think if you were 4'10", you may struggle with the lock, as the gate is 5' 10" and the lock hangs down to about 5' 6". I am not sure what your point is about the separate taps. The drinking water tap is about 6' from the Chemical disposal point tap, which is the requirement, so all correct, in my view. We would have appreciated your comment about the spraying tap when you were here, as it was easily fixed with a new tap. Kind regards

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great communication ahead of arriving at the camp site. I requested to be aware from other campers as I was travelling with my dog who's anxious and in training and Anthony was very accommodating. It was easy to find the campsite (clear signs for entry) and I used the what3words app to get the direct location. It's a secure site with access through a locked gate. The pitch was great, I had plenty of space for my car and tent. There's a sink for washing up, and taps for refilling on water and the toilet was clean and pleasant. Woke up to a wonderful sunrise over the hill.

Disliked: If you're coming as a backpacker/minimal camping gear, the ground isn't super even for cooking. It'd be great if there was a makeshift sort of bench/table for the tent areas to safely cook. The check-in time on the website said until 8.30pm but someone arrived around 11pm and their headlights shone right through the tent - this is not a fault of the site owners just a suggestion to bring an eye mask (and ear plugs) to get the best night sleep.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Dear Gemma, Many thanks for the review. We have taken your constructive comments on board and I agree that it's frustrating when people completely ignore the check-in times. It's also difficult to police. Kind regards Anthony

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: A pleasant experience. Host/campsite manager was super helpful and informative by text of local facilities and instructions on entry. I worried when I saw a portaloo exterior but the toilet was proper with flush and was clean and stocked. We followed a beautiful path signposted to the local pub up to a gorgeous vineyard, church and watched the sunrise with lovely views. Whst a local find. Perfect for our 1 night stay.

Disliked: If we were here on holiday and wanted to stay a good few nights we would need somewhere else with a shower.

Local attractions

The maritime town of Maldon (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to start your tour of the area – perhaps with a stroll along Hythe Quay to see one of the UK’s largest collections of London barges. You can also launch canoes or hire bikes here, or join boat trips out onto the Blackwater Estuary. Just outside the town, the Museum of Power is worth a visit to see the miniature railway and working steam pump. For more watery activities, head to Hoe Mill lock (10 minutes), a well-known local wild swimming spot, or the historic harbour at Burnham-on-Crouch (20 minutes). The Dengie National Nature Reserve (half an hour) is a good place to be if you’re into your birdwatching. Gardens more your thing? RHS Garden Hyde Hall (15 minutes) is the big draw nearby, with several themed areas keeping things interesting all year round. The three acres at Beeleigh Abbey Gardens (10 minutes) are also worth exploring, or you can try the trails of Danbury Country Park (also 10 minutes) if you’d like to see something wilder.
