Around the site

  • Well-equipped Essex farm site with excellent accessible facilities
  • A 25-minute drive to Audley End; Colchester Zoo 40 minutes
  • Archery, frisbee golf and trailer rides on site, plus animals to meet
Getting around a campsite can sometimes be tricky for guests with restricted mobility – but not so at Hill Farm Camping in the Essex countryside, a mile from the village of Great Bardfield. The team at this 18-acre site have ensured that their place is accessible to all guests, with wheelchair-friendly paths and facilities including disabled toilets, a wet room with shower, a height-adjustable changing table and a power outlet for a personal hoist. Other handy amenities include a playground, picnic tables and a shared fridge and freezer. This welcoming spot isn’t just a campsite – it’s also an activity centre, where guests can play disc golf and have a go at archery or off-road skateboarding, walk around the wildlife lake or hire bikes to see some of the surroundings. Exploring isn’t off limits for less-mobile guests either, as there are rides available on wheelchair-friendly trailers that are also great fun for kids. And of course this is a farm, so there are chickens, sheep, goats and horses to meet as well as alpacas, emus and kangaroos. When you’re not busy talking to the animals, you may like to get a campfire going, wander up to the village for a drink in one of the pubs, or take day trips to places like Audley End or Colchester Zoo.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Ruth and Alan were so friendly. The site had lots of free activities set up for the kids. The animals roaming about were lovely.
There was grass sledging, zip line, quad bike ride with Alan. Soft archery, swing ball, a frisbee stand.
was fun having the golf balls and clubs to have a swing.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Fantastic site that is perfect for families. We had a 5 year old and a 2 year old and there was so much for them to do. They especially loved the rides around the site - and so did we! Toilets and showers are lovely and clean. I don't think I saw a piece of litter all weekend. Even with all the rain we had the site didn't get muddy. Thank you so much.

Disliked Nothing - even the hills were a long overdue workout 😀

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The baby wallabies popping their little heads out mum's pouch was beyond cute. My favourite thing is emi the emu, being up close and her loving a head scratch melts my heart. Love Ruth's kindness for helping me out plus Alan for being fun with the kids. We even loved getting freezing feet in the stream and nearly loosing our shoes!!

Disliked Cold shower due to alot of use in short space of time but resolved after half hour.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked All of the things to do onsite for children are fantastic, very safe and open, the roaming alpacas, different areas to pitch etc - loved all of it. Owners are such lovely and welcoming people too.

Disliked A couple more toilets would have been nice - did get a queue sometimes.

Liked We booked this as our first camping experience with our 2- and 4-year-old girls, and we honestly couldn’t have asked for a better stay. From the moment we arrived, Alan and Ruth were so welcoming and made us feel completely at ease.

The girls absolutely loved the trailer ride and all the activities dotted around the site. Everything was exceptionally clean and well looked after, and the animals were definitely a highlight. They were especially excited to meet the emu and even got the chance to stroke it!

It was such a lovely family-friendly experience, and we would 100% recommend staying here. We’ll definitely be coming back. We absolutely loved it! ❤️

Disliked The only dislike I had was that I had to leave.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We had an amazing weekend here and everything was pretty much perfect\. There are plenty of activities for the kids, and they absolutely loved it — a brilliant place for a family camping weekend\.

The only downside for us was the number of toilets\. They were always spotless and very well looked after, but I don’t think there are quite enough for the size of the campsite\. It would be a great improvement to have a few additional toilets further down the hill, perhaps near the zip wire or the little river/stream, so you don’t have to walk all the way back up\.

Apart from that, we couldn’t fault the place\. Beautiful surroundings, loads for the kids to do, and a really enjoyable weekend.

We will definitely be coming back!

Local attractions

Anyone who hasn’t had their fill of wildlife on site can meet rhinos and tigers at Colchester Zoo (40 minutes’ drive). Your younger offspring will likely enjoy an hour clambering around the soft-play centre at Little Monsters House of Fun (15 minutes), and most kids will also love the miniature railway ride and fairy-themed walk at Audley End House and Gardens (25 minutes). There’s more family-friendly entertainment to be had at Mountfitchet Castle and Norman Village (half an hour), where kids can dress up as knights in a recreated medieval hamlet. Great Notley Country Park (15 minutes) is another handy spot for you all to let off steam, with facilities for horse riding and cycling. Any grown-ups keen to grab some cultural time can have a nose around the fabulous art collection at Gainsborough’s House (half an hour), or tour rooms filled with antique treasures at the National Trust-owned Melford Hall (35 minutes), a Tudor mansion that started life as a Benedictine monastery. Followers of aviation history can also check out the Spitfires and Vulcan fighters at IWM Duxford (45 minutes).
