  • Off-grid meadows and woodland camping near the East Sussex coast
  • Camber Sands, Rye, Hastings and Battle all within 35 minutes’ drive
  • Woods with stream, swings, dens, habitat hunt and natural play area
Wend your way to the East Sussex countryside for the aptly named Pop-up in the Woods, a rural, off-grid retreat in an area of outstanding natural beauty four miles from the historic town of Hastings and the beaches of the south coast. Set across three well-kept meadows and mature woodland, this 20-acre site has the makings of your own secret hideaway no matter what part you choose to stay in. At this family and dog-friendly site, the woods beckon for whole days full of adventure, with a stream to play in, as well as swings, hammocks and den building kit to keep everyone busy. Visitors up for more outdoor exploring can head to the wide open beaches at Pett Level (20 minutes’ drive) and Camber Sands (35 minutes). On arrival you’ll leave your car and your loudspeakers at the gate – this is a quiet site that's geared up for peaceful stays. Everything’s been thought about to help keep things as close to nature as possible, but still nicely convenient. Because the site is adaptable for groups of different sizes, the facilities are adaptable too – with a mix of compost and traditional loos, plus hot showers, built in vintage horsebox trailers, so they’re portable. Each pitch has a washing up bucket and recycling bags, with firepits and buckets available for safe extinguishing. There are also drinking water points across the site, alongside washing-up stations. For picking up provisions, a meal out or a traditional fish and chip supper, Hastings has several supermarkets plus all the eateries within a 15-minute drive.

Local attractions

At the southerly edge of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, yet only a short drive from a variety of the South East coast’s highest-rated beaches, this site is a great option for visitors who enjoy both the countryside and the seaside. Head inland to Bodiam boating station (20 minutes drive) to explore the River Rother by kayak, rowing boat or paddleboard. Or make for the open sea to try paddleboarding around Fairlight Cove from Pett Level beach (20 minutes) – where you might also want to try some fossil hunting. The unspoiled expanse of dunes at Camber Sands is 35 minutes by car and the seaside towns of Hastings (15 minutes drive) and Bexhill (20 minutes) are close by too. History buffs shouldn’t miss a trip to Battle (20 minutes drive), the site of one of the most famous events in British history in 1066, or the fascinating medieval hilltop town of Rye (25 minutes).
