Bottom lake 2020

General

  • Scenic and peaceful adults-only fishery site in the High Weald
  • A 20-minute drive from Tunbridge Wells and 30 minutes from Lewes
  • Fishing lakes, wild swimming and nature paths on site

Angling for a peaceful holiday without kids underfoot? Ramble along to Hastingford Fishery, an adults-only site less than five minutes’ drive from the East Sussex village of Hadlow Down and 20 minutes from Royal Tunbridge Wells.

This site should suit fishing fans down to the ground. It’s got several fishing lakes to choose from, so settle down on the banks with rod in hand and while away a few hours (or days) in quiet contemplation, waiting for something to bite. But please note, the site asks anyone fishing to only use barbless hooks, and for fish to be returned to the lake quickly after being caught.

Not the fishing type? All sorts are welcome here and there’s plenty to entertain in a leisurely fashion: paths wind around the lakes and (as this is the High Weald) through the countryside, there are spectacular views towards the South Downs National Park from the top lake. A spring-fed lake is on site too to cool off in with some wild swimming.

When it comes to time for eats, pick up supplies from the supermarkets in Uckfield, Heathfield or Crowborough or take a drive to Buxted for some posh pub food (it'll take about 10 minutes to drive to any of these).

Please note

Guests under the age of 25 are not allowed on site.

Guests staying in the shepherd’s hut must park vehicles in the designated area, however, an exception is made for guests who require disabled parking.

    What a fantastic place!
We stayed in a Shepherds hut and it was so clean, comfortable and in a beautiful setting. Mark and Geraldine really had thought of everything, to make our stay very enjoyable.
Will 100% be returning and would highly recommend it.
Our 2 dogs loved it too, and it was great to have a huge fenced in field that they could have a good run about in.

From the manager...

Thank you for a lovely review and we hope to see you again soon. Apologies if the bathroom facilities were a little crowded, this was just because of the bank holiday and we had 8 pitches, whereas we normally only have 6.

Small site, great outlook and nice to walk around the farm and take a dip in the plunge pool, which was definitely needed over the bank holiday. Although limited facilities, never had to que for the loo, shower or washing up facilities. Mark the owner was very chatty, friendly and helpful with local information. Utimatley the sight is near enough to the coast and things to do but also far enough to be away from the hustle and bustle. A great find at such short notice on a bank holiday.

    Disliked:

    Uneven field

From the manager...

A lovely and fair review, thank you. Sorry about the bumps in the field, it's been so dry, we've been unable to roll them out. We will be able to smooth it out soon.

We stayed at the Fishery for only one night during the bank holiday in August. The scenery was beautiful especially with couple of lakes near by.
We received a very warm welcome on the arrival and were asked to just to set up the ten where we wanted. We were also briefly introduced to the facility and what is available.
There is a shower, toilet, washing up sink, fridge freezer and the washing mashing facilities. Everything nice and clean. Weather was very hot on that day and we were free to help ourselves with the ice left in the freezer by the owner.

    Disliked:

There is not much we disliked really apart from the fact that there is only one toilet and one shower available. I am not sure how busy it gets and it was just enough for roughly 9 tents (a couple per tent) incl. ours.

From the manager...

great review thank you. The site only takes the maximum that were there when you were, so should be fine. And it was bank holiday....

The pitch loads of cows droppings, firewood payed was green logs, dificult to ignited.

From the manager...

These guests drove straight past designated camping area and were going to park and pitch elsewhere on the farm including private lawn areas. Were caught wandering around our farm machinery with torches late at night. We lent them a table free of charge. The firewood provided was from 3 year old stored logs so was not green and no one else had problems. Any cow pats found were very old. They intended to fish but had no licence. Would not be welcome again.

Local attractions

Active guests may want to strap on walking boots and head off on explores of the South Downs National Park, 25 minutes’ drive from base. It’s a top spot for hikes, bikes, rides and rambles, and is also an International Dark Sky Reserve for those who are keen enough on stargazing to opt for an after-dark visit.

If the South Downs is too sprawling to appeal, make tracks instead for Ashdown Forest, the original Hundred Acre Wood (actually 500 acres), to wander the paths that inspired AA Milne to create Winnie the Pooh. Be sure to gather up lots of sticks along the way... one is never too old for a game of Pooh Sticks.

There’s plenty of tamer nature within easy reach too, as gardens at Sheffield Park, Borde Hill, Nymans, Wakehurst and Herstmonceux Castle are all within 45 minutes of the site, and Leonardslee – with its Wallabies, dolls' house museum, afternoon tea, and wine, chocolate and cheese tastings – is under an hour away.

When a more urban experience beckons, a 20-minute drive brings guests as far as Tunbridge Wells, where shopping in the Georgian Pantiles, digging around museums and taking a sip at Chalybeate Spring are highly recommended. It’s 30 minutes to visit the medieval castle, Museum of Sussex Archaeology and Anne of Cleves House in Lewes, Brighton is 25 miles away if seaside days appeal, and it’s just over an hour to London on the train from Crowborough, 10 minutes away.
