  • Spacious site next to woodland in the middle of a country estate
  • A 10-minute drive from Battle and half an hour from Hastings
  • Campfires, barbecues and kids welcome on the peaceful grounds
Intrigued by the idea of an ever-so-peaceful trip amid enticing East Sussex scenery? Then bag a space at Brightling Park Campsite, a sustainable spot in the middle of a 400-year-old country estate. While the idea of settling in by a manor may seem prim and proper, the grounds of this house are actually rather wild – guests pick their own pitches next to ancient Wealden woodland and there are oodles of grassy areas for the younger travellers to tear about. Room aplenty and a campfire-friendly policy also mean nights are to be spent outdoors under the stars – the site provides spades to dig a shallow hole for a blaze and sells firewood and kindling sourced from the estate’s woodland. (Please note there's a Leave No Trace policy here, so you'll be asked to take all your rubbish away when you leave.) There's a real rural outlook here, with lots of livestock in the nearby fields, including lambs, piglets and foals. Horses, pigs and sheep live opposite the park during the summer months – you’re welcome to say hello over the fence but try to avoid feeding them or getting too close. Once you’ve met the animals, flit off down the footpaths in the park’s surrounds on a popular walk to Dallington Forest or stay closer by and explore the grounds. History buffs can learn all about Brightling Park’s background and the tale of its once eccentric owner Mad Jack Fuller by visiting the seven follies he built in and around the estate. In line with the relaxed ethos of the site, the facilities are simple: think a chemical loo and access to clean water. For other types of refreshments, set off to local pubs serving up ace ales – the staff have a few firm faves, so ask which ones they’d recommend.

Local attractions

Your first port of call when exploring the local area? The 17th-century Bateman's (five minutes’ drive), the former Jacobean-era home of poet Rudyard Kipling. Visit the 14th-century Bodiam Castle next to stare at another swish structure, then make headway towards the traditional towns of Battle (10 minutes) and Rye (25 minutes) to admire more attractive architecture. Historical sites really are all around this area – Hastings and its famed 1066 battleground is reachable in half an hour, as is William the Conqueror’s old abode Hastings Castle and a couple of maritime museums. Not one for poking around the past? Saunter along the south coast seaside, including the shingle-covered Stade beach (half an hour), instead.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The hills of Sussex and the coastal line are stunning. A lot to do in the surroundings. Can visit Shipwreck museum in Hastings, Fishing museum Smugglers caves, go for a good old carting race, take the lift to Hastings castle or spend a whole day at Bodiam castle which I really recommend if you have children 10 and under.

Disliked: no shower facility, the outdoors toilet was out of use, had to enter the manor house to use toilet where only 1 toilet would serve 4 families. Mind the very aggressive dog on site.
