  • Pop-up meadow camping on an East Sussex working farm with rural views
  • A five-minute drive to Bodiam Castle; 35 minutes to Camber Sands beach
  • Country walks from site; foodie pub and farm shop a 10-minute drive
In need of some down time? Chances are you’ll find it at Eyelid Farm, a peaceful, pop-up campsite on a working farm near Bodiam in East Sussex. With only a handful of spacious pitches available, the camping field is set on a sheltered field with nothing more than the occasional herd of deer to disturb you. OK, so this is true wild camping, where you’re left pretty much to your own devices. Feel free to pick your own pitch and don’t forget that well-behaved dogs are allowed to come on your mini-break too. Facilities may be minimal, but toilet facilities and a standpipe with fresh water are available. You can buy logs and kindling at the site, and also hire a firepit for barbecues. From your pitch, it’s a 50-minute walk through fields and woodland to a farm shop in Salehurst for local produce to cook up on the grill, or if you’re sworn off cooking, there’s a dog-friendly foodie pub (it’s best to book in advance) close by, with a leafy terrace and gorgeous views of surrounding fields. Oh – and finally, a couple of house rules. The owners do ask that you keep noise to a minimum between 10.30pm and 8am, so everyone can enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked EVERYTHING!! This site is a hidden gem. Its exactly as described. Spacious, quiet, unspoilt, the shower block/loos are brand new and better than at home ha ha, super clean also ! The owners are very helpful, someone was always around if we needed something or had a question, but they also left us to our own devices. We stayed 2 nights, Friday night there were 3 of us, Saturday night it was us on our own - in an 18 acre field, just amazing!! So much to do nearby, we brought our kayaks and launched in Lossenham Lane for a donation of £5 to the church, we had a brilliant stay, it was so relaxing. Hardly any wifi which was perfect for switching off. The stars on a clear night are awesome, my partner even managed to capture the Milky Way above our tent - pic attached. We will most definately be back, loved it!!

Disliked This isnt a dislike, more of a suggestion, to have some more hooks and/ or shelves maybe in the shower room to be able to put things on.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Location was beautiful. We choose our own pitch on the far side of the meadow and the chidren loved running about chasing grasshoppers. The host was really helpful and gave us a map of walks and pubs. We visited Bodiam castle which is great for kids and found a good place to canoe on the river Rother. The Castle Inn next to Bodiam Castle was a great place to eat. Good Sunday lunch. Lots of space for kids to play.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Nothing

Disliked The gate was locked no answer no one was there luckily I went by motorbike and I got through a side gate I drove up to the farm house to check in couldn't find anybody so parked up near the so called shower/ toilet block looked at the camping bank there was a 45° angle on the so called field I looked over to the bottom corner and there was a campervan .this field is approx 800 yards long and I could hear the road traffic .
The grass on the so called field was 8 inches tall and the border line around the field had been cut shorter. With all that and the Thunder and rain predicated I didn't want to get washed away so decided to leave and go home.
The farmer did turn up opened the gate and let me go.

Local attractions

There are some smashing walks (with a smattering of history thrown in) close to base camp. Download a self-guided tour of the grounds of moated, National Trust-owned Bodiam Castle (five minutes’ drive), while Scotney Castle (30 minutes, also National Trust) offers looped walks through woodland as well as romantic, lakeside ruins. To nose around glorious gardens, head for Great Dixter House and Gardens (15 minutes) or Sissinghurst Castle Gardens (25 minutes). After all that high-brow stuff, it’s time for the kids to have some fun. Treat them to a ride on a steam train along the Kent and East Sussex Railway (25 minutes), or let them loose on the ziplines and rope courses at Go Ape Bedgebury (20 minutes). If splashing around in the waves is more your style, pack up the car and head for the coast for old-fashioned family fun on the beach. Camber Sands (35 minutes) has got plenty of dunes for the kids to run around on, and lots of chances to make towering sandcastles – it’s also a top-notch spot for windsurfing.
