Woodland pitch with fire pit - logs are available for your stay from our on-site tree surgeon

  • Quiet and secluded working farm with a large pitching field
  • In East Sussex, two miles south of Ashburnham in the High Weald
  • Direct access to the 1066 Country Walk; well-behaved dogs welcome
This farm site in the High Weald area of East Sussex gets a big thumbs up for its green rural outlook, secluded location and well-kept amenities. Gardners Farm, a family-run site in sunny South East England, is two miles from Ashburnham and a 10-minute drive from the medieval castle at Herstmonceux. It's also set half a mile back from the nearest main road, meaning that camping here is wonderfully peaceful and comes with very low levels of background noise. There is some low-level pedestrian traffic, though, as handily this site has direct access to the 1066 Country Walk. The grounds themselves are split between a spacious grass pitching field and a half-acre woodland area, all of which are set in the laidback surroundings of a working farm. Gardners Farm's wild camping area has basic amenities including a cold water tap and a composting toilet; guests camping on the main field also have access to showers and flushing loos. Well-behaved dogs are welcome (the farm has a few of their own) and barbecues and firepits are allowed as long as they're raised off the grass. This is an out of the way spot, and lots of nature can be seen here, but for further wildlife watching you're also an easy 10-minute drive from the edge of Pevensey Levels National Nature Reserve. For trips to the coast, head 20 minutes down the road to Pevensey, or drive for a similar amount of time to the larger local town of Bexhill.

What customers say

Gardeners Farm offers a peaceful countryside escape with beautiful views and plenty of space. Visitors praise the immaculate and clean facilities, particularly the showers and toilets, and the friendly, helpful owners. Campfires are permitted, and free fire pits are available. While most reviews highlight a perfect experience, a few mention a rough access track and the occasional early wake-up call from farm animals.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Space to camp where you liked, safe space. Camped close to toilets. Close to Eastbourne. Location great.

Disliked stinging nettles around back on tent, children got stung. Road into venue. Signage not very visible.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We had a fairly peaceful stay. The facilities were clean and the grounds were well kept. Lovely views of the countryside.

Disliked We didn't see the owners once! We could have literally just turned up and nobody would know! There was a large group who, despite being lovely people and kept noise to a minimum by 10:30, they took up the whole EHU section and spread themselves across the pathway to get to the toilet/shower. My son felt really uncomfortable walking past. Perhaps the if the owners were around more this could be managed better. There is nothing to do there! My boys were bored and we needed to leave the site for most of the day.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked I really liked the shower and toilet — very clean and almost like at home. Everything I needed was there. They also sent me an email explaining when to arrive and where everything was located.

Disliked What I didn’t like was that the farm itself is quite far from Eastbourne beach and once you get onto their private land, you still have to drive for a long time on a rough road — rocky and full of bumps. I also wasn’t very pleased that their rooster was crowing at night for some reason and kept me from sleeping.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (woodland)

Liked Old school back to basics camping. Low cost. Campfires allowed on pits by woodland camping. Owner just lets you get on with it, not constantly patrolling. Don't have to buy logs like at other campsites. Facilities seemed pretty good, didn't really pay much attention as it's not a big deal to me, toilet blocks were clean though. Pound for pound, a top notch campsite.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (woodland)

Liked Lovely pitch, really good shower, friendly host. We stayed in the woodland pitch which gave nice shelter from both the sun and the wind in such a hot day.

Local attractions

Bring your binoculars and wander around Pevensey Levels National Nature Reserve (10 minutes' drive) in search of local birdlife, or pack a windbreak, some sun cream and a good book and head to Pevensey beach (20 minutes) for a day of relaxing by the waves. If something more active's in order, you might like to walk the chalk cliffs around Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters (35 minutes), or you could head a little further down the coast to try paddleboarding or other watersports at gorgeous Cuckmere Haven (40 minutes). This part of the South East has castles galore, from Bodiam (20 minutes) with its imposing moat and 14th-century towers to the handsome brick buildings at Herstmonceux (20 minutes). Hastings and Battle (25 minutes) are also close if you fancy heading out on the trail of King William the Conqueror – you can walk all or some of the way there via the 1066 Country Walk that starts right outside the site gates.
