  • Dog-friendly pitches with access to walks; pub five minutes’ drive
Heading East Sussex way? If you’re looking for that heady combination of peace, a warm welcome and country views, make a beeline for Cairds Camping and Caravanning Site, 10 minutes’ drive from the village of Wadhurst and surrounded by pretty rural scenery. There are myriad walks directly from this family-run site, as well a range of attractions nearby – from activity centres such as Bewl Water (20 minutes’ drive), to gorgeous gardens like the one at Great Dixter House (half an hour). Mind you, getting out and about means you’ll have to tear yourself away from your pitch, which comes with great vistas across the surrounding fields and woodlands. Your dogs are welcome to join your rambles and explorations, but please keep them on a lead at all times when on site. Plenty of pretty villages tucked away in the East Sussex countryside have traditional pubs – the nearest being Burwash (five minutes). If you need a quick top-up on supplies, head to Wadhurst, which has a few small shops; for bigger shopping sprees, Royal Tunbridge Wells (25 minutes) should see you right. And the practical bits? Facilities include communal showers, a washing-up area and drinking-water points across the site. Should you prefer to fend for yourselves instead of heading to a pub, you can hire firepits on site as well as buying logs for the fire.

What customers say

This small, quiet campsite offers beautiful countryside views and is praised for its friendly, helpful owners. Facilities, including showers and toilets, are generally noted as clean and well-maintained. Guests appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and proximity to walks. Some minor points include a preference for more hooks in showers and washing-up areas, and that some pitches are sloped. Future improvements include new toilet/shower blocks and potentially flatter pitches.

Bell tent

Liked The Bell tent was immaculate it was like a picture out of a glossy magazine. The kitchen etc was very well equipped. We had a comfy set chairs and large table all provided too. Beautiful scenery and very quiet. The owners kept the shower/bathroom facilities very clean I saw them cleaning at least 2 times a day. It was wonderful to see swallows flying overhead, horses running in the lower paddock at night the stars were so clear and the bats flew so close it was very peaceful.

Disliked We brought some lovely farm fresh eggs but they sold out quickly. We wanted to buy some more and maybe having a little stock of local honey/jams would have been great.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Ideally situated for exploring English Heritage and National Trust sites such as Bodiam Castle, Battle Abbey and Batemans. Small quiet site, only 9 or so pitches, excellent views across the countryside.

Disliked The only downside was that my shower was great one day and then I couldn't regulate the heat another day and the water was scalding. Not sure why. Some pitches are quite sloped but ok at the top of the field.

Electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Really comfortable site.
Owners just let you get on with it.
Enjoyed so much we extended for another night.

Disliked Not owner fault but I just want to say that it's a shame that some camping families feel the need to take over the campsite, play music so loud behind our tent that the valley can hear it, and be generally obnoxious.

Local attractions

A 17th-century mansion, National Trust - Bateman’s (10 minutes’ drive) was the home of Rudyard Kipling for more than 30 years, until his death in 1936. In addition to elegant rooms decorated with period furniture, there is a water mill and a natural play area, plus year-round events highlighting the author’s best-known works, such as ‘The Jungle Book’. A remarkably photogenic moated stone fortress, Bodiam Castle (20 minutes) dates back to the 14th century. Walk under the fearsome oak-and-iron portcullis, then wander inside, checking out the medieval kitchen, with its huge roasting hearth. It’s also possible to climb up the Postern Tower. Bewl Water (20 minutes) is the place for active holiday makers, with walking and cycling trails at the Country Park, a large inflatable adventure course (Bewl Water Aqua Park) and watersports for both children and adults (plus climbing) at Bewl Water Outdoor Centre.
