  • Family-run, family-friendly campsite in rural East Sussex
  • Half an hour's drive from Brighton and one hour from London
  • Well-stocked shop, wild spa, kids' entertainment and camping barn
Surrounded by stunning Sussex countryside, Wapsbourne Farm (Wowo) likes to describe itself as a 'family-run, family-friendly campsite, focusing on the important stuff’, and it’s hard to argue with that. Located on the edge of Sheffield Park near Haywards Heath, this groovy site welcomes campfires and dogs and is big on all things related to nature and outdoor living. With enough space to allow families to camp together in groups, the pitches at Wapsbourne Farm (Wowo) are a short distance from top-notch amenities (there are flushing toilets in every field, plus plenty of hot showers and washing-up areas). With a well-stocked on-site shop, you won't have to venture far to top up your food and drink supplies; there are also visiting food vans at peak times if you fancy a ready-made hot breakfast or dinner. The on-site wild spa is another highlight: guests looking for that extra level of luxury can arrange a spell at the sauna and plunge pool, with personalised treatment options also available. Elsewhere, there's a camping barn with wifi throughout, which includes a shared workspace for grownups who have to get a bit of admin done. It's easy to keep the kids happy while you're working, though, as there's free entertainment at peak times, with fire shows, music nights and talent competitions all in the offing.

Local attractions

The site is a 10-minute stroll from Sheffield Park's charming 1880s station, where you can board steam trains that run up and down the Bluebell Railway, a heritage line that runs through the Sussex countryside up to East Grinstead (the station also has a museum and gift shop). Also within spitting distance is a local brewery and taproom where you can sample fine Sussex ales (10 minutes), plus another four pubs within 45 minutes' walk (The Sloop Inn, The Bull, The Oak and The Crown). This part of the world has National Trust properties galore – it might make sense to start with Sheffield Park and Gardens, given that you're so close (five minutes' drive), but there's also the fascinating Arts and Crafts-era Standen House (25 minutes) or Nymans and its renowned all-seasons woodland gardens (half an hour). Looking for a family-friendly day out nearby? The site owners also recommend Heaven Farm (five minutes), a lovely outdoor spot where there are lots of nature trails plus mini golf, an ice cream parlour and a massive kids' play barn.
