  • Luxury sole-use rural retreat for two in the East Sussex countryside
  • A 15-minute walk to Robertsbridge; 25 mins' drive to Rye or Hastings
  • Separate sleeping and living huts surrounded by enclosed garden
Peace and quiet are in plentiful supply at The Challoners – this is an exclusive-use site on an East Sussex farm, so it’s likely that the only noise you’ll hear is the chatter of the Canada geese landing on the lake about 200 metres away… Your domain consists of two bespoke huts, kitted out for two guests (and a dog too if you like) and providing everything you’ll need for a comfy countryside break. One of the huts is the ‘living’ hut, with a kitchen area, a shower room and a lounge space with squishy sofa. There’s underfloor heating for cool days, and on warmer ones you can wander through the French doors onto the deck for breakfast with a view. A few metres away is the ‘sleeping’ hut, with a luxurious double bed and an ensuite bathroom (with rolltop bath); it’s all kept cosy by underfloor heating and an antique-style stove. Both huts are enclosed within a private garden, which has a fire area, outdoor seating and a hammock and also makes a safe place for a dog to have a run about. Hide yourselves away here for the duration of your stay if you like – or get out and about. The village of Robertsbridge is 15 minutes’ walk away for a gastropub, a coffee shop/bakery, a shop and an award-winning Indian restaurant. Alternatively you can simply stroll along the farm’s footpaths (at their finest in spring, when the ancient woodland bursts with bluebells) or borrow maps and guide books to find walking trails nearby.

Liked: Just Wow! We were greeted by the owner Jim who showed us around and was so friendly and helpful. The moment we walked through the gate, down the pretty path leading to the enclosed garden, we knew we were going to love it. The lodge which has everything you need for a perfect stay, was just so beautiful. Walking onto the decking and through the French doors I was so pleased with how pretty it was. You have a kitchen/dining area then a lovely, comfy seating area. At the other end is a gorgeous walk in shower and a toilet. The lodge has a coat area with a basket for your shoes and crocs were in there too. Our dog Monty absolutely loved the garden and refused to come in. When it’s time for bed you walk across to the shepherds hut. Inside is again a beautifully decorated bedroom with a luxurious bed. Dressing gowns hang for your convenience. Then through some pretty doors was the main feature of the room for me, the roll top bath! There is shampoo/conditioner, soaps and lots of little bits that are helpful. There is an outside hose which is very helpful for washing down boots or your dirty fur baby. We were very warm during our stay here even without the heating on. We loved that you have the whole place to yourself. We had a lovely card to welcome us along with some delicious treats. (Thank You) We can’t wait to come back in the warmer months too.

Disliked: Nothing

Lodge

Liked: We chose to spend our 25 Wedding Anniversary at The Challoners with our two golden retrievers and enjoyed two wonderful nights enjoying the peace and quiet of the area. The care and attention by the owners make this a wonderful rural retreat. We enjoyed beautiful country walks from the door and the owner told us there are two good pubs walking distance from The Challoners. We will be definitely returning for more than two nights next time. We were so lucky with the weather and loved being in the garden sitting out or laying in the hammock and knowing our dogs were in a dog friendly garden and only being able to hear the sounds of birds. Even if we returned and we were not so lucky with the weather we would still have a cosy enjoyable stay.

Local attractions

Pootling around on the farm and in its surroundings is a lovely way to spend time, but there’s plenty around if you want to explore further. Bodiam Boating Station (20 minutes’ drive) is the place to hire boats and canoes to paddle on the River Rother, or you may like to head to The Hub @ Quarry Farm (15 minutes) for watersports, archery, outdoor fitness classes or spa treatments. Heading south, it won’t take long to get to the coast for a stroll around the ancient town of Rye or a game of crazy golf and a chip supper in Hastings (both 25 minutes). Camber Sands (35 minutes) is a good place for a paddle and a scramble through the sand dunes. For other options, take a look at walks in Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (15 minutes), history-themed days at Battle Abbey and the 1066 Battle of Hastings site (10 minutes) or a wander around Rudyard Kipling’s former home at Bateman’s (15 minutes). Gardens like Pashley Manor Gardens (10 minutes) and Sissinghurst Castle Garden (half an hour) are close by too.
