  • Farm camping in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Battle and Bodiam Castle 10 minutes’ drive; Camber Sands half an hour
  • Dog-friendly wild site with a small petting farm and horse sanctuary
A peaceful farm stay in lovely East Sussex countryside, with a small petting farm and a sanctuary for retired horses and ponies up the lane: what’s not to like? It’s time for a (nearly) wild camping adventure at Barn Meadow Camping, 10 minutes’ drive from Robertsbridge in the spectacular High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This pop-up site is spot-on for families and groups of friends, with lots of space on the four-acre, slightly sloping camping field to kick a ball around. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at Barn Meadow, but must be kept on a lead at all times – there are lots of woodland footpaths straight off the camping field for exercising your pets (and indeed the kids too). Facilities are somewhat basic, running to a hot shower, toilet and washing-up sinks, and there is no electric hook-up on site. That means you’d better remember to take torches and a supply of batteries for getting around after dark. Oh, and by the way, if you’d like to visit the animals, please book ahead of time with the owners of the campsite.

Local attractions

East Sussex is steeped in history. Start your time travel at Battle (10 minutes’ drive), scene of a rather well-known conflict in 1066. Visit the battlefield and take in the museum relating the story of the Norman Conquest in neighbouring Battle Abbey. Housed in a centuries-old building, Battle Museum of Local History is also worth a peek, to see dinosaur footprints and an axe reputed to be a relic of 1066. Head for seaside Hastings (25 minutes) to learn more about 1066 with a short film at the hilltop castle, then take the kids deep underground on the interactive Smugglers Adventure through St Clements Caves. Next up is the National Trust-owned, 14th-century moated Bodiam Castle (10 minutes), where you can book guided tours of the stately ruins and coax the kids to join in archery sessions or medieval craft workshops. Close by, the former Cinque Port harbour town of Rye (20 minutes) sits prettily on the confluence of three rivers and serves up half-timbered houses and cosy pubs in cobbled streets. After all that culture, should you fancy heading for the beach, options include Bexhill (25 minutes), backed by the modernist De La Warr Pavilion, and the vast powdery expanse at Camber Sands (half an hour).

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely location, quiet, spacious pitches (pitch where you like) in a field. Two washing up sinks, two showers and two toilets - was fine but it was not busy when we visited. Simple, no frills site, exactly what we came for. Owners are very helpful and kind. We thought there would be no internet but we had a pretty good signal at the top of the field.

Disliked: Portaloos (they were clean however..)

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review and feedback, we hope to update the toilets to match our home built shower block for next season.
