  • Peaceful back to basics site in a scenic South Downs village
  • Around a 10-minute walk from the South Downs Way; country pub nearby
  • Organic veg, eggs and pantry essentials sold from the site’s farm shop
Looking for a simple, peaceful and community-oriented retreat? Based on 33 acres of land in Kingston, a peaceful village in the South Downs National Park, Lovebrook is exactly that. Get back to nature and take in the simple pleasures of the wide-open fields and South Downs views, then sidle over to the country pub a few minutes’ walk down the lane, which has a food menu, outdoor tables and a spacious playground. The location is lovely, and so is the idea behind it – Lovebrook is part of a multi-faceted ecological community project, so all profits go towards running wellbeing and nature activities for underserved or vulnerable groups. With direct access to the South Downs Way from a 10-minute footpath at the end of the lane, this is a good spot for walkers tackling the long-distance trail as well as those just planning shorter strolls. The grassy tent pitches are spread over a huge field with a composting loo and a sink with running water, so there’s a firm back-to-basics vibe. There are no bins or recycling facilities, so you’ll need to whisk any rubbish away with you at the end of the stay (naturally, you’ll want to keep this place as splendid as it is). Cars aren't allowed on pitches but you'll be lent a wheelbarrow to shuttle your stuff around. If you need any supplies, there’s a lively Saturday morning farm shop selling the farm's own organic veg, plus bakery, dairy and essential pantry items. The shop turns into an honesty shop at other times. The working farm hosts a market garden on its veg plot throughout the week and you may spot the team hosting groups for the aforementioned nature activities on the land. Kingston is a peaceful village with a 13th-century lane, so it’s well-suited to quiet family-friendly breaks.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: I cannot express how great this place is. Not only in the fact that it is an incredibly beautiful campsite, they are also a social support non-profit. On the weekend they sell the things they grow on the farm, which look amazing. Alongside this, there is a beautiful 15th century pub next door with a great outdoors seating area and wonderful traditional inside. The farm is a 30 minute walk to Lewes and a very nice bus driver on the 123 can take you to Newhaven where you can walk to Seaford which is a great walk, onto the Seven Sisters. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very close to the South Downs Way, quiet and relaxing. Pitches are quite far from each other with high grass in between; it almost felt like we were alone. Facities are basic with no showers (as advertised) but the toilets and sink are more than enough. The host was very welcoming. There is also a very cute pub 2mins walk away.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: -The scenery -Location -Eco aspects -Wildlife I think if you're in a big group and don't mind the lack of shower, this could be your perfect place. The loos were a lot better than anticipated. You can see fantastic views and its great to wake up to swallows flying and the crickets. The gardens look great too.

Disliked: -Clock tower -Safety concerns due to it being a quiet place with no gate but is in a nice area. -Not being greeted by anyone (again safety concerns) However if like me you're on your own or in a couple, you might be intimated by how quiet it is. But if your looking to really switch off from the world then this could be the right fit

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great back to basics site. Lovely pitches with a large amount of space around each one so the whole site feels spacious and peaceful. It's tucked into a valley with far reaching views not far from the coast. Hannah is very helpful and knowledgeable about the local area. We'll be back!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful and peaceful. Only campers that night so ample choice of where to set up. Only saw the hosts once on arrival.

Disliked: The compost toilet was awful, although advertised on booking I didn't think it would be that bad. The smell and the flies left me holding myself as long as possible but then leaving enough time to go as its a good walk from camp. Now I know why🤣... The path from the car to camp is quite far and a wheelbarrow is provided but the path is just unused land with undeveloped ground and holes. It is advertised as no car on campsite but effort on the path would be more appealing and safe...

Local attractions

Down for some simple exploration? Lewes (10 minutes’ drive or accessible with a walk, cycle or bus ride) has a lively selection of cafés and shops for antiques and arts. There’s much more of that sort of stuff in busy Brighton (20 minutes), of course, not to mention the beach and Brighton Palace Pier. Get there by car, a 15-minute train from Lewes, a bus from Kingston, or with a 45-minute bike ride. Where might you get some sublime views of the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs? Your options include Cuckmere Haven (25 minutes), a beach with watersports, or the rural beach town of Seaford (20 minutes). Beachy Head (35 minutes) is the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain. It’s on the way to Eastbourne (35 minutes), where there are yet more seaside amusements and a huge watersports scene.
