Bell tents

  • Luxury bell tents at a family-friendly site in the South Downs
  • Glyndebourne 20 minutes’ drive; Brighton half an hour
  • Firepits and a communal tipi; village pub within a 20-minute walk
If all you want or need is a break from the stresses of life, a glamping holiday at Beau and Bell at South Farm might be just the ticket. Sitting within the South Downs National Park, this family-friendly site is a 10-minute drive from the historic town of Lewes and only about 7 miles from the spectacular Sussex coastline. Beaches like Newhaven West and Saltdean can be reached within a quarter of an hour. And what about the site itself? You’ll be staying in a fully furnished bell tent with soft flooring, plush bedding and soft lighting to create a cosy ambience, plus a firepit and a picnic table. If you feel sociable, there’s also a communal tipi for relaxing in and making friends. There’s plenty to do in the area, from hiking the South Downs Way (you can walk east, towards Eastbourne, or west, in the direction of Winchester), to paddleboarding or kayaking on the River Ouse (five minutes’ drive or 20 minutes’ walk through the hamlet of Southease). If you fancy a quiet pint, a 20-minute walk takes you to the Abergavenny Arms, in the quaint village of Rodmell. Of course, you could also choose to do very little indeed, except catch up on your reading and gaze at the sunset – and maybe a spot of stargazing after dinner. Speaking of dinner, the supermarket in Telscombe Cliffs (10 minutes) should stock everything you need for your barbecue.

Bell tent

Liked: Great tent, great location

Disliked: The tent was invested with bugs. Should and could have been cleaned beforehand. We were busy two hours after arrival removing them ourselves. They didn't return the next day so they were probably there a while already. Nobody at the campsite in the evening. Nobody reachable by phone

Bell tent

Liked: We loved our stay at Beau & Bell. The setting was idyllic, the tent was great and we particularly liked the enclosed field & surroundings, which meant we felt we could let our kids roam around safely. The larger communal tent with sofas was a great touch. It meant all the kids had an indoor place to play and groups can gather together and also shelter from rain if needed. We'll definitely be booking again. Wifi was limited (can be accessed in the car park area away from the campsite field) but that wasn't such a bad thing! It forced us to put our phones down and enjoy the break together.

Bell tent

Liked: The owners were really helpful and accommodating. The location of the site nestled in a valley makes it really quite special. It was dark enough at night to see Perseids meteor shower!

Local attractions

Bring your copy of ‘Mrs Dalloway’ if you visit National Trust - Monk’s House (five minutes’ drive, or a half-hour walk through the country), the pretty 17th-century cottage where Virginia Woolf used to live and entertain the Bloomsbury Group with her husband Leonard. In season, the garden of the house is a riot of colourful flowers. Glyndebourne (20 minutes) is known for its opera festival, which runs from May till August, staging six different productions each season. The performances come with a 90-minute interval, during which you can devour a picnic on the lawn (or visit the venue restaurant). The lure of the seaside might take you to Brighton (half an hour), where the pebble beach is a top spot for kicking back on a deckchair with some fish and chips. There are classic amusements on Brighton Palace Pier (not to mention great views of the seafront), while the elegant Royal Pavilion enchants with its opulent Indian-inspired architecture.
