  • Modern lodges in a peaceful rural area between Hastings and Rye
  • Half a mile from Pett village and five minutes' drive from the coast
  • Outdoor seating, fully-equipped kitchen and full-size bathroom
If the coast is calling but you’re keen to keep yourself supplied with mod cons (including a roof over your head), give Oak Valley Lodges a go. The modern and well-equipped holiday lodges here are half a mile from the village of Pett and around a mile and a half from the East Sussex coast. Strolling to the seaside is a fine idea from here – follow the walking routes for a pleasant 25-minute trek through the countryside to Pett Level Beach (it’s a five-minute drive if you’d rather). For more sea views, take off to the beaches at Winchelsea (10 minutes' drive), Hastings (15 minutes) or Camber Sands (25 minutes) with its cracking sand dunes to scramble in. There’s no need for the family to get under each other’s feet during your stay – each lodge has two bedrooms, plus a fully-equipped kitchen with everything you need to keep growling tums at bay. A bathroom is also on hand, as is a washing machine to deal with any mishaps. No need to miss your fave TV shows either – the open-plan lounge in each lodge comes with a sofa and flatscreen TV with Freeview. Each lodge also has outside seating and a firepit, and barbecues are permitted, ensuring evenings are well-spent back at base. For more eats, stroll up to the village where a couple of pubs serve food and there's a tearoom for fixes of caffeine and cake (an essential aspect of hols, some might suggest…).

Local attractions

Visit Rye (10 minutes’ drive) and keep your eyes peeled for landmarks including Rye Castle Museum, Henry VIII's Camber Castle and the historic Landgate gateway. It’s a sensible choice for grabbing supplies too – general and farmers’ markets set up during the week and fresh fish is available every day behind the harbour (that barbecue back at base is calling…). In addition to the beach at Hastings (15 minutes), the town has amusement arcades, adventure golf, Hastings Castle, a Blue Reef Aquarium, Hastings Museum and Art Gallery and plenty of lunch places and shops to mosey around. It’s worth checking what’s going on before you visit, as it’s a hotspot for festivals and events throughout the year (how might you fancy festivals of street food, gin, rum, reggae, wine, seafood or beer?). Visit the legendary site of the Battle of Hastings at Battle Abbey (half an hour) or travel a bit further to entertain the kids with animals and play centres at Knockhatch Adventure Park (50 minutes) and Drusillas Park zoo (one hour).
