General

  • 'Camping as it used to be' on a 200-acre farm
  • Wildlife haven with badgers, foxes, barn owls and more
  • Spacious pitches surrounded by stream, woodland and fields

You might describe this as ‘back to basics camping’, but that doesn’t explain why guests of all ilks are generally blown away by this fab little farm site, where the owners offer ‘camping as it used to be’.

If noisy clubhouses, the kids glued to their consoles and being so close to other campers you can hear them snore drives you a tad mad, Freshwinds Camping might just be a breath of fresh air: it’s in a secluded spot on a 200-acre farm, between Rye and Hastings deep in the East Sussex countryside, with pitches spacious enough to spread around on and nature to spot by the bucketload.

Rabbits, badgers, squirrels, weasels, foxes, field mice and a growing bird population can all be seen around the site and farm by day; at night, spotting foxes and barn owls should be a hoot. More domestically, the farm has a herd of suckler cows and a flock of ewes which lamb in March and April; horses and their owners cantering about in the livery yard, and hens laying eggs available for guests to buy.

The site is surrounded by a small stream, woodland and fields. Guests can usually drive to field pitches to unpack their kit before parking in the car park, but if you’re camping in the woodland glade, the farm team will provide a wheelbarrow to get things back and forth as the glade is only accessible by foot.

Campfires are allowed – of course – but please use the same places as previous campers to minimise any impact on local plants. Logs are available to buy from the Freshwinds Farm team, as well as jam, cakes and the aforementioned eggs. The village of Pett – and its three pubs – is within a mile.

Please note

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

No adult groups of more than 4 people.

Wonderful site location amongst the trees, big open space for the children to play and explore. Woods, stream, rope swings and small playground on site. Lovely walk up to the farm garden with fairy trail. Garden itself pretty with a fairy yurt for the kids. The barn with toys and games kept my two entertained on a very rainy day. Other campers friendly and stuck to the noise restrictions. Good warm showers and undercover camp kitchen for washing up and eating if the weather is bad.
A lovely back to basics site, with a very chilled out feel

    Wow !!!
Loved this place, a real back to basics campsite Children running wild, playing roleplay games in the woods with the other children on the site, not a tablet or phone in sight. Very friendly and spacious site. So quiet at night with only the stars and the sound of the owls for company. Cannot praise it enough, even got used to the toilets.
Will definately come back and spend longer here.
Would recommend the yoga in the yurt, a lovely experience. A lot of thought has gone into this site to make it a magical place, the fairy trail is so lovely and well done.

I will sum up with a quote from one of the children who came up and spoke -
"If you follow the path you can see where the fairies live and if you take a pound you can buy a mouse from the shop, that a lady has made"
    BEAUTIFUL

The feel of easy going, natural camping. The freedom for the children to go around in a safe but wild nature environment. The perfect brake from routine in urban life. The friends the children made, becoming a group to hang together during the time at campsite. The relaxed chats with other parents around the fire once the children were in bed. The showers were great powerful and nice hot water. The children playground in the middle of the field a nice surprise and a place to meet all the children. The fairy trail and the farm walk seeing the animals.

I am thinking to drop a star for this reason but I could take a bit of my own blame on this. We realised the last day there were freezers and plugs we could have used in the farm to charge mobile phones or change ice packs. I think it could have been nice to have a refresher from the farmers about this service. But I have to say at the same time we could have asked or find the information if it is some where... and as well it kind of have a nice feeling of wild camping that you don't have to go through a process of checking in and out, it is very relaxed and you might not even see the farmers when in or out. So we are happy and even more excited if we come back to make use of the service which it could be quite useful when staying a few days or like with us when the first whole day was raining and we could not do much without getting wet. They have this room in the farm with toys and two confortable arm chairs where we could have spend some time dry and the children entertained. To make it perfect I would love to have those freezers and electric plugs in the kitchen area of the campsite but this might be difficult to bring electricity down there i don't know, but could make it very convenient. Not the best place to go with bicycles, we took our ones there and could not use them, this obviously it is not the camping fault it is the nature of the terrain in the area with hills up and down and very narrow roads without any space for bicycles to ride safely away from cars.

From the manager...

We love this sort of review very constructive. We are looking at ways of charging phones by solar at campsite electric is out of the question
Also looking at the issue of keeping food cooled more on that next year
As for cycling the lanes are a bit daunting but not too busy we do get quite a few cyclists who seem to appreciate the location so maybe location is better than one might think

If you like your camping to be all-mod-cons and conveniences so that you'd barely know you were camping, then Freshwinds probably isn't for you. If on the other hand you want to be able to let your kids roam around the field and woods, be lulled to sleep by owls, and hear nothing much else but a murmur of voices, the crackle of wood fires and the background baa-ing of sheep and lowing of cattle, then you might love Freshwinds. Little ones when we were there were enjoying the climbing frame/slide, the numerous ropeswings, and the fairy trail around the site (and the chicks, rabbits and guinea-pigs to visit!). We loved being able to sit round the firepit in the evening toasting marshmallows, and the quiet at night - no road noise whatsoever. (The price you pay for that is a wiggly drive in down winding lanes with few passing places - and on one wet morning we had a slightly unnerving slidey drive out up the muddy track, with a car behind us and one coming down the other way all nearly getting stuck!)

The pitches are well spaced out round the edge of a nice flat field, so while there is a communal feel you're never in each other's faces, and we never had to queue for the showers. Plenty of hot water (if a bit prone to fluctuate when someone was washing up next door!). Sinks, loos and showers are not lit so do bring head torches or lanterns for the evenings.

The roofed-over washing-up area also has a big table and benches, handy if your tent isn't big enough to all sit in to eat or play board games when it rains!

Logs for the firepits are £5 a bag (though some of ours was a bit damp and smoked a lot) and the kids can have fun collecting kindling from the woods around. Free range eggs are always available too which made breakfast very easy.

There's lots to do in the surrounding area - beaches, castles, stately homes etc all very accessible once you've done the initial ten-minute drive out down the windy lanes.

We all had a lovely, relaxing, back-to-nature time and would happily have stayed longer. Will be recommending to friends with small children.

    Disliked:

The composting toilets are quite something. Entirely fit with the ethos of the site and the smell is only noticeable right next to them (we were on the nearest pitch and didn't smell them at all from there) but when you're in there they do stink. My youngest decided a clothes peg on the nose was the best tactic! Best to accompany little ones to the loo, especially since the steps up there are open and have a lot of nettles growing underneath (we heard a few wails from small people who slipped and got stung) and since the toilets are unlit. Some sort of lighting in the loos/showers/washing up block (solar powered??), and any way that could be found to make the toilets less smelly (I'm sure I've used composting toilets elsewhere that have smelt less) would be the only improvements I could think of.

Directions

Our campsite is midway between Hastings and Rye, south east of the A259 Hastings to Folkstone road.

To find us, take the turning east off the A259 at the top of Guestling Hill (opposite a Beefeater pub called The White Hart) to the village of Pett, and then take a left turn into Watermill Lane which is about 300m after the butchers shop.

Watermill Lane is a narrow country lane (please be careful!). After about a mile, look out for the sign for Pickham Farm and Freshwinds Camping on the right.

Proceed down the farm drive; you will see a small hut on your left which we call our virtual reception point. Here you will find the necessary information about your check in.

Local attractions

If you’ve come to East Sussex to birdwatch, paint or stroll romantically with a beloved, the scenery and sights nearby are a breeze to reach.

The Site of Special Scientific Interest Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is a 10-minute drive away for the ornithologically inclined to spy wetland specimens such as terns, plovers and oystercatchers among the 275+ species recorded so far. The ancient wetlands of Pett Level, also within 10 minutes, have more of the same – although do look down at low tide to see very old trees poking through the sand.

When it’s time for town, Rye and Hastings both deserve at least a day each, possibly more if you want to go back and have another go at Hastings’ fabulously steep funicular railway, the steepest in Britain (if the town looks familiar from way up here on high, you’ve probably watched Foyle’s War).
