  • Peaceful and family-friendly site at Bexhill-on-Sea in East Sussex
  • Historic 1066 Country 15 minutes’ drive; Bodiam Castle half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; seasonal basics shop and a bus service to Bexhill beach
Ditch the wheels and settle down for a Sussex seaside and heritage stay at quiet Chestnut Meadow Glamping and Camping, a family-friendly site sheltered by trees and hedges on the outskirts of the resort of Bexhill-on-Sea. A bus stop is conveniently located right in front of the site, allowing you to get around without needing a car: the beach is about 10 minutes’ away by bus. Chestnut Meadow is in a historic part of green and pleasant England known as 1066 Country, so-called after the 11th-century Battle of Hastings and the introduction of Norman rule into the land (even if these facts make the kids yawn, they’ll probably be horribly fascinated to learn how King Harold died). Battle Abbey, Herstmonceux Castle and Bodiam Castle are nearby so you can learn about the area’s history, and all are reachable via local cycle routes. Chestnut Meadow has a playground, plenty of room to run around with a ball (and enough space to exercise any dogs) and a modern, heated shower block with a parent-and-baby washroom right next door. There’s also a small seasonal shop that sells all the basics for simple camping meals. Green initiatives found on site include recycling points, wildlife areas and the use of recycled materials where possible.

What customers say

This is a large, well-maintained campsite with spacious pitches and friendly, helpful staff. Facilities, including shower blocks, are generally reported as clean and good, though some mention they are dated. Families appreciate the play areas and the peaceful atmosphere. Occasional issues with muddy pitches, bin overflow, and noise have been noted, particularly during busy periods.

Bell tent (four person)

Liked Lights on the tent very pretty and beds were comfy.

Disliked Tyre swing just outside tent 16, which meant people kept congregating outside our tent and sitting on our furniture.

Local attractions

To understand how the Normans took over England all those centuries ago, get yourselves along to the English Heritage-managed 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield attraction (15 minutes’ drive), set at the abbey that was built on the battlefield in its aftermath. More Sussex heritage is uncovered at the splendid castles of Herstmonceux (also 15 minutes) and moated Bodiam (half an hour). Change the pace from history to family adventures and take the kids to spot parrots and meerkats at Drusillas Park (35 minutes). Alternatively, let them have a splash around on the boating lake at Knockhatch Adventure Park (half an hour), where they can also watch flying displays by birds of prey. Bexhill beach (10 minutes) is a good shout for family walks along the shoreline, while further along the coast, you can spot reef sharks in Hastings Aquarium (25 minutes). Right next-door is the Fishermen’s Museum, with its collection of local fishing boats and memorabilia. For a further slice of culture, stop by the Modernist-style De La Warr Pavilion to see what exhibitions are on, or head for Bexhill Museum (both 10 minutes) to unearth anything from dinosaur footprints to model railways.
