  • Back-to-basics campsite between Hastings and Battle in East Sussex
  • Battle Abbey 10 minutes’ drive; Hastings and Bexhill-on-Sea 15 minutes
  • Grass pitches on a family smallholding with horses, hens and wildfowl
Based in East Sussex’s 1066 Country, 15 minutes’ drive from Hastings and 10 minutes from Battle Abbey, the adults-only camping field at 4 Acre Farm couldn’t be handier to get to. It’s directly off the A2100 and five minutes from the main A21, with easy access to public transport too (if you ask, the local bus will stop at the end of the driveway), making it a smashing base for venturing to Rye (half an hour), Pevensey Castle (20 minutes) and south-coast beaches like Bexhill-on-Sea (15 minutes). Set on a working smallholding with a couple of pet horses, plus chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys and bees ranging free (hence no dogs are allowed on site), the small, family-run site has running water on grass pitches and a dedicated block with composting toilets. You can hire firepits and spark up a barbecue, or hotfoot it across the road to the country pub serving up lashing of decent beer and pub classics. There’s an on-site honesty box for products from the smallholding, including honey and eggs (just the job for breakfast fry-ups when available). Be sure to stick around the site for a spot of star-gazing on clear nights, and in stormy weather, you might get the chance to watch squalls as they move along the English Channel.

Apple non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Had a lovey stay here at the beginning of the month. Nice small campsite with 2 clean composting toilets, charging facilities and honesty shop. Pitch was very spacious for my little tent so had plenty of room. Site basic and well maintained. As a mature female solo traveller, appreciated the site being small and friendly. It is perfectly situated to use as a base while visiting different National Trust/Historical Houses properties and gardens in the area. Had seen other reviews about noise from the road so took earplugs so slept brilliantly :) - will definitely stay there again.

Disliked: nothing to dislike

Apple non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Super friendly host, honesty shop, solar-powered phone charging point. Site well laid out with areas of long grass. Brought my own tent, but glamping tents looked very nice.

Disliked: Shame about the very noisy main road and the electricity pylon in the middle of the site!

Bell tent (two person)

Liked: We had the small bell tent, very comfortable beds and very good quality bell tent. We were met onsite and everything explained well, we really liked the honesty shop and being able to charge phones etc. many sites don't offer this. Being opposite a nice pub was a great benefit also :-)

Disliked: could have done with a sharp nice or scissors with the cutlery

Local attractions

Will it be a beach day first? Backed by dunes, the sandy expanse at Camber Sands (40 minutes’ drive) is popular with kite- and windsurfers (you can hire gear at watersports centres on the beach). Bexhill-on-Sea (15 minutes) has a long strip of shingle beach safe for swimming, and you can watch the local fishing fleet launch from the pebble strand at Hastings (15 minutes) or play amusement arcades on the pier. This area of East Sussex is aptly named 1066 Country, thanks to its proximity to Battle Abbey (10 minutes), where you can tour the abbey ruins, see the spot where King Harold died in 1066’s Battle of Hastings, and clamber up to the gatehouse roof for views over the battlefield. Keen for more history? Climb the stone towers at fairytale Bodiam Castle (20 minutes) for views over the moat, or have a snoop at the period Victorian costumes in Bexhill Museum (15 minutes). Caught a rainy day? Head for shark-filled tanks at Hastings Aquarium or go deep underground to follow in the footsteps of 19th-century bootleggers at Smugglers Adventure (both 20 minutes).
