  • Relaxed family-run touring park close to the Sefton coast
  • A five-minute drive to Formby beach; half an hour to Liverpool
  • Play area and dog walk area on site; great food pub 10 minutes' walk
A break five minutes' drive away from the beach? And one that’s likely to suit all family members – kids and dogs included? Make your way to Merseyside for a stay at Willowbank Holiday Park, a wonderfully welcoming and relaxed spot close to the Sefton coastline. This is a particularly splendid stretch of coast, as it’s home to England’s largest sand dune system, stretching for around 20 miles from Liverpool to Southport. Walking, cycling and birdwatching are popular pastimes around here – along with time spent on the beaches, paddling, building sandcastles and simply soaking up the sweeping views over the Irish Sea. The closest sands to the park are Ainsdale and Formby beaches (both about five minutes' drive), but you’ll also be in a great position for trips to Southport, Crosby beach or the buzzy city of Liverpool. You’ll have options for getting around too: there’s a bus stop at the end of the road and a railway just over a mile away, as well as local paths for walking or bike outings. The location of this family-run park is an attractive one, for sure, but that’s not all this place has to offer. The facilities are equally excellent too, with a play area and football pitch for the kids and a dedicated dog-walk area for canine customers and their companions. A launderette, wifi service and picnic tables are handy extra touches – and the bathroom blocks (with showers, toilets and accessible facilities) are kept immaculately clean. Final cherry on top? You’ll be able to walk to a much-loved local pub in about 10 minutes, for a tasty meal or a drink in the (hopefully) sunny garden.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The site, toilets, showers and facilities were immaculate. The pitch was very level. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Dog walk was lovely, with plenty of bins. Short drive to the beach (which you can drive onto). Loved the wildlife.

Disliked: On some piches there was traffic noise from the busy road (not from the one we were on, number 38). Wifi was not free, it had to be paid for.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Everything about this site is excellent, welcome on arrival and escorted to our pitch with assistance to site our caravan. Lovely clean site and toilet blocks.

Disliked: The only downside and this is only my choice is that the pitches do not have fresh water or waste so not fully serviced pitches, but it is still a lovely site and I will be going back again.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Staff were friendly and helpful. Toilets and showers clean. Site was kept tidy. Good space on pitch.

Disliked: Location. This site is right next to a busy dual carriageway, and is also right next door to, and on the flight path for the runway to the RAF base. I could have saved my money and parked next to the M6 and got the same amount of rest. Avoid if you are looking for relaxation and peace and quiet.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Friendly staff Really nice enclosed dog walking area. Clean toilet and shower facilities. Well maintained pitches. Great location - 10 mins from formby national trust.

Disliked: We didn’t like that if you wanted WiFi you had to pay for it, whereas it mentioned WiFi on the pitch up website - which I read it as you got WiFi included, this was my interpretation.

Local attractions

It's the natural attractions that bring many people to this area – and you can sample several of them easily enough from here, perhaps looking out for red squirrels in Formby Beach Woods (10 minutes' drive) or birdwatching at WWT Martin Mere (25 minutes). You could also take a walk on the 21-mile Sefton Coastal Path, get out for a game of golf at one of several local courses, stroll through the Botanic Gardens in Southport (10 minutes) or come face to face with the iron men of Antony Gormley’s 'Another Place' art installation on Crosby beach (20 minutes). A day out in Liverpool (half an hour) is a great idea – the city is packed with shops, attractions and museums (many of them free to visit, including the Museum of Liverpool and Tate Liverpool). If you’ve got kids with you on holiday, it's also handy to have places like Southport Pleasureland (10 minutes), Farmer Teds Adventure Farm (10 minutes) and Knowsley Safari (25 minutes) on your radar.
