  • Pop-up site a 25-minute drive from Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena
  • Leasowe Beach 15 minutes’ drive; Rhyl one hour
  • Club house with large TV screen showing the Eurovision Song Contest
Calling all Eurovision Song Contest fans on the hunt for accommodation during the most fabulous weekend of the year, when the United Kingdom will step in as host of the colourful, spangly event on behalf of last year’s winner Ukraine. You were praying for affordable accommodation, and the Eurovision fairy godmothers have answered: Prenton RUFC Campsite, in Birkenhead, has simple pitches on a level field a 25-minute drive from Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena, where Mae Muller will take to the stage representing the UK. Although this is a budget option, it’s not without its amenities, starting with a modern toilet block and a communal area with hot-water showers (for those who don’t want to queue for a private cubicle). Best of all, there’s a club house with a large-screen TV that will show all the Eurovision action. If that doesn’t deserve ‘douze points’, what does? There’s plenty to do in Liverpool while you wait for the show, starting with all things Beatles, from The Cavern Club to The Beatles Story Exhibition/Museum, which happens to be just around the corner from the arena, on Royal Albert Dock, so you might catch a glimpse of your favourite pop star on their way to rehearsal. Barbecues are allowed on site – just be sure to keep your Eurovision party outfit (sequin-covered Abba-esque flounce sleeves, anyone?) well away from the fire; the nearest supermarket is a five-minute drive away. A bus connection to Liverpool is a 15-minute walk from the site.

Local attractions

There’s more to Liverpool than Eurovision and The Beatles, you know? The dock area is home to several top-class institutions, including the Merseyside Maritime Museum, with displays on the Titanic; the International Slavery Museum, with moving exhibits covering the history of the slave trade; and Tate Liverpool, with its collection of contemporary art. For a day at the seaside, head to Leasowe Beach (15 minutes’ drive), a sandy stretch backed by vegetation-covered dunes. Part of the North Wirral Coastal Park, the area is popular for picnicking and birdwatching, or you can walk to the Leasowe Lighthouse for far-reaching views from the lamp room at the top. Pop across the border to Wales and visit Rhyl (one hour), where the SeaQuarium includes nine different habitats – among them, a tropical reef and rockpools with starfish and crabs. Seal Cove is a state-of-the-art exhibit that gives you an underwater view of the harbour seals as they splash and swim in the pool.
