  • On the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • Family-sized tents with firepit/barbecue provided; dogs welcome
An escape to the countryside comes with an extra layer of comfort and convenience at Lunesdale Escapes, where guests stay in spacious and well-equipped bell tents at a park five minutes' drive from Kirkby Lonsdale. This is a fabulous Lancashire location, on the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and within easy reach of both the Lake District and Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty too. Getting out to any/all of these is straightforward, as the site is just off the A65 for speedy journeys without any little winding lanes. You may not be in that much of a hurry to leave, however, as the bell tents are rather cosy and comfy… Each one is pitched on a wooden deck to ensure things stay solid and dry underfoot, and provide dedicated outdoor space for alfresco dining and stargazing (outdoor dining furniture and a firepit/barbecue are provided to help such activities along…) Inside, the tents have a double bed and two single fold-out futons, all with bedding provided. Electric points have been installed too, as have appliances like an electric heater, kettle, mini fridge and bedside lamp. Shared facilities close to the tents include bathrooms, a washing-up area and a launderette. You’re welcome to bring dogs along for a stay in the tents, but please note they’ll need to be kept on leads while around the site.

Bell tent

Liked: Such a nice place to stay. The toilets/showers are clean and warm. We stayed with our children and small dog in one of the beautifully decorated bell tends with lots of inside and outside space. Perfect distance from your neighbours. Kettle, heater, bedding, fridge, bbq/fireplace everything there. We loved it and will come back!

Disliked: The busy road is a bit loud

Bell tent

Liked: The setup was lovely. Toilets, showers and laundry room were immaculate. Owners were really friendly and communication was excellent.

Disliked: The location of the bell tents was very close to a busy national speed limit road meaning it wasn't peaceful. This didn't affect us as we were the only ones in the bell tents field ......but if the other two pitches were being used there is no privacy between pitches.

Bell tent

Liked: The site was close to the town of Kirkby Lonsdale where there was some fab little shops and restaurants. The site facilities were clean and the bell tent was so cosy, the little electric fire kept us warm.

Disliked: Close to a main road so can be noisy.

Bell tent

Liked: We had such a great stay, the field in which the tents where in was enclosed so the dogs or the kids couldn’t escape, so much space to run around, the host were lovely and friendly, very welcoming, the tents are gorgeous had everything we needed including tea and coffee (which I forgot to bring) the bed was so comfortable, there are only three tents and we had all three as we are a big family which was great but I imagine it is still as comfortable with other people in the tents, the shower block is right by the field for the tents, the toilets and showers were so clean also. It rained most the time we were there but it was still a great experience and would love to stay there again

Disliked: Not a dislike as such (my husbands snoring was worse) but some may dislike it, in a morning you can here the road traffic and although the fridge was a great addition to our camping experience don’t expect to fit too much in.

Bell tent

Liked: The cleanliness and decor of the bell-tent is amazing! So spacious and just all round amazing!

Disliked: Nothing to do with the site or bell-tent experience at all just something to note if people are needing taxi’s for travelling into Kirkby Lonsdale or elsewhere for a good beer then book in advance as they can be hard to come by!

Disliked: So close to the road, but it is fenced off incase you bring the kids, but you forget about the noise when enjoying yourself

Local attractions

Kirkby Lonsdale (five minutes' drive) is a great place to kick off a walk – from the centre of town you can head out over the Devil’s Bridge to stroll along the riverbank and up to the viewpoint known as Ruskin’s View, or follow one of the circular routes that run from the town into the surrounding area. There’s a golf course just outside the town too if that’s your preferred method of taking in the scenery. Being on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, all sorts of walks and bike rides await there too – the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (10 minutes) is a favourite, as are trails taking in the Ribblehead Viaduct (20 minutes). White Scar Cave (10 minutes) gives you the chance to see what sits under the surface, while a scramble up the slopes of Ingleborough (15 minutes) offers up views from up on high. Once you’ve taken in the Dales scenery, you may like to explore the different landscapes of the Lake District National Park – Windermere (half an hour) is a good place to target for watersports, lake cruises and waterside walks.
