  • Well-maintained peaceful caravan park five minutes from Ormskirk
  • A half-hour drive from Liverpool and beaches of Southport and Formby
  • Library, games room, games field and fishing area on site
After a quiet spot for a break, with equally easy access to coastal, country and city attractions? Off to Ormskirk with you, then, and the chilled surrounds of Abbey Farm Caravan Park. The town centre is a mere five minutes’ drive (or half-hour trot) from the park for times when you need a supermarket, restaurant or pub trip. At other times, there’s much rural relaxing to be done on site – depending on your definition of a good time, perhaps borrow a book from the library and put your feet up for a while, or use the spacious field for games and general running about. A games room has been set up to keep the fun times going even on damp days; on brighter days (or if in possession of the right gear) guests can also settle in for a spot of fishing. Canine pals are welcome to join in on your hols, and have been given their own exercise area for doggy dashing around. Venture out from your peaceful pitch and many options present themselves: beach outings around Southport and Formby, urban wanderings in Liverpool and rural days of farm parks and canal boats are all within a drive of half an hour or so.

Local attractions

Coast? It’ll take you half an hour or so to get to Formby, to walk through the pine woods and visit the red squirrel reserve before hitting the splendid sandy beach. Aim a little further south and a similar drive will take you to the iron men of Anthony Gormley’s Another Place on Crosby beach; head north instead for Southport’s attractions including Pleasureland and the British Lawnmower Museum. Country? Pack the nippers in the car for 15 minutes or so to get to Windmill Animal Farm or Farmer Ted's Adventure Farm, or see what you can spot at the WWT Martin Mere wildlife park. You can take canoe safaris through the wetlands here, or head to Burscough, 10 minutes away, for a leisurely day gliding along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal on a barge. City? Liverpool’s just over half an hour away and has a fab collection of museums and attractions to explore. The Museum of Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery and Tate Liverpool are all worth a wander, and as an added bonus, they’re all free to visit. Don’t expect to come away with too much in your pocket though, for the city does have something of a rep for its shopping too.
