  • Well-kept, landscaped pitch and wigwam park on the edge of Croston
  • Set out in green meadows with a well-tended garden and play area
  • Excellent location and surrounded by traditional pubs/restaurants

Score! Royal Umpire Caravan Park at Leyland in Lancashire hits quite a few goals if you're looking for a holiday park in England's north-west that's close to the sands at Southport, and within easy reach of ringing the tills/partying in Preston or lighting up the kids' faces in Blackpool.

It's rather ace on site too at this neatly kept and prettily set out park, with a pick of tent, tourer and motorhome pitches laid out in green meadows, opps for a more laidback Lancashire stay in budget-friendly wooden wigwams sleeping up to five, and a sunken garden to sink into with a book and a cuppa.

There's a mini football pitch for mini Ronaldos (there might be quite a few of these given the park's location near Liverpool and Manchester), and a well-equipped play area with a soft wood bark surface, swings, slides and a climbing frame if the kids want to make a bit of a racket. The shower blocks are centrally heated and have free hot water, baby changing and disabled access.

Several reasonably-priced and family-friendly pubs and restaurants are in the area: check out the Highfield, serving breakfast from 8 until 11am, two-for-one deals on mains and a Sunday carvery; the Wheatsheaf, with an excellent range of real ales (hurrah!), freshly prepared meals and events (quiz night on Tuesdays, live music on Saturdays and karaoke once a month); the Bangladeshi restaurant Panshi and the Italian restaurant Fresco Fresco.

Dogs will find Royal Umpire right in their league too, as it's dog-friendly and has a big area set aside for canine constitutionals. And the park also has free wifi – result.
