Royal Umpire Caravan Park: Relaxing outside the pod

General

  • Well-kept and landscaped park on the edge of Croston
  • Among meadows with well-tended garden, play area and dog exercise area
  • A 30-min drive to Southport and Preston; 50 to Liverpool/Manchester

Score. Royal Umpire Caravan Park at Leyland in Lancashire hits quite a few goals if you're looking for a holiday park within easy reach of old English villages and scenic countryside... and close to the sands at Southport as well as within easy reach of ringing the tills/partying in Preston or lighting up the kids' faces in Blackpool.

It's rather ace on site too at this neatly kept and prettily set out site, with a landscaped park and a sunken garden to sink into with a book and a cuppa. There's a mini football pitch for mini Ronaldos (there might be quite a few of these given the park's location 50 minutes from both Liverpool and Manchester), and a well-equipped play area with a soft wood bark surface, swings, slides and a climbing frame if the kids want to make a bit of a racket. The shower blocks are centrally heated and have free hot water, baby changing and disabled access.

Dogs will find Royal Umpire right in their league too, as it's dog-friendly and has a big area set aside for canine constitutionals – result.

This site is a member of Harrison Leisure UK group.

Only bins at entrance meant people dumped waste bags near waste water and tap enclosures. Inconsiderate dog owners failed to clean up poo after letting dogs make mess right outside caravan. Not sites fault, just standard of people!!

Pitch size and space was good with a nice pub a short walk away.plent of space for kids to play

    Disliked:

Toilet and shower facilities were VERY POOR and taking into account the current situation they were actually unacceptable Dirty Toilets Dirty Showers Dirty Floors.red blood looking substance on 1 of the 2 sinks and lots of dead or dying wasps
We were there for 2 days and I did not see anyone cleaning the facilities we used our own in the end as we were disgusted at the state of the site ones
For us the standard and state of a sites toilet and shower facilities give an impression of the management of a site
The owners need to spend a bit of money to get the facilities up to a standard that matches and exceeds that of an otherwise decent park
Would we stay here again ?

Reasonably close to rail and bus services

    Disliked:

Generally condition of site, toilets were very poor condition, restricted hot water in showers, impossible to shower and keep clothing etc dry. Floor was dirty with mud etc. Dish washing area the two sinks available were never cleaned, grease and food left in the bottom. An overall general lack of attention to detail. A final point, close to our pitch a dog that barked regularly, annoying.

Local attractions

Royal Umpire Caravan Park's location is right on the ball if you're game for exploring the north west: it's easy to get to all the region's main towns and cities from here as well as the Lancashire coast just to the west and the Forest of Bowland to the north east.

Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool don't need much of an intro from us and should probably have at least a day/night out spent in each, as should Preston, which includes the biggest gallery space in Lancashire at the Preston Free Public Library, and Bolton, once named by boffins as England's friendliest town.

Back at base, Croston five minutes' drive away is a comely, and quirky, little village: they celebrate Bastille Day here every 14 July, for example – ooh la la. Eat/drink your way around town at the plentiful cafés and restaurants or, for more substantial shopping, take your readies to the five floors of the Botany Bay Mill in Chorley. Cedar Farm at Mawdesley sells crafts, clothing and gifts and has a monthly farmers' market.

If the kids need mollifying after a morning at the shops, take them to Worden Park in Leyland to let off steam: it has open meadows, mature woodlands and a hedge maze to run around in, a miniature railway, nine-hole golf course and lots of wildlife to see.

Must see

  • Camelot Theme Park (3.1 miles)
  • WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre (5.5 miles)
  • Forest of Bowland (6.3 miles)
