  • Well-equipped dog-friendly site 20 minutes’ drive from Lancaster
  • Forest of Bowland 15 minutes’ drive; Morecambe Bay 25 minutes
  • Two fishing lakes; two playgrounds; book and DVD library; food shop
Sandy beaches, vast moorlands and lush forests, and historic cities are all within fairly easy reach when you stay at Moss Wood Caravan Park, in the Lancashire countryside about halfway between Preston to the south (15 minutes’ drive) and Lancaster to the north (20 minutes), and about 15 minutes’ drive east of the Forest of Bowland National Landscape. And Moss Wood is not too far from the coast, either: Morecambe Bay, with its huge expanse of sand, is a 25-minute drive away. That all sounds like busy days of wanderings and exploration might be on the cards. However, for those who look forward to the holidays so they don’t have to drive anywhere, there’s plenty to do on site at this family-run caravan park. Keen anglers might want to start with a relaxed morning at one of two fishing ponds. The kids also have a choice, with two play areas (with swings, slides and miniature adventure courses), plus a free book and DVD library. And if the idea is to spend time together as a family, you might want to consider heading to the large recreation field for a kickabout or a game of tag (and the family dog can join in, too.) On-site facilities include a large, well-maintained and heated (always a big bonus) toilet and shower block with large cubicles for disabled guests; there is also a launderette and a shop selling locally sourced products (including cheese, crisps, baked goods and beers).

What customers say

Moss Wood is a very clean and peaceful site with excellent facilities, including immaculate toilet and shower blocks. Guests praise the well-maintained grounds, helpful staff, and on-site shop. Fishing lakes, play areas, and dog walking spaces are popular. Some reviewers note that touring pitches can be small, and the site's rural location means a car is recommended for exploring. Shower water timing and WiFi consistency were minor drawbacks for a few visitors.

Liked What a lovely caravan site.
Clean shower and toilet block. The grounds are full of flowers and butterflies, bees etc. The shop had all the basics and extra treats. Even though there were several children running and playing the site was quiet. A great base to visit Lancashire and less than 10 minutes away is wallings ice-cream parlour.

Liked An amazing site, very clean, organised, friendly. We felt welcomed, couldn’t do enough to make sure we settled in well. Explained everything about the site.
Small area for touring vans, campers motorhomes etc with a fresh and clean toilet block. The disabled facilities were second to none.
We would definitely stay again if the need arises.
The site was so quiet it was hard to imagine it is the height of the summer season.
They even have free WiFi which was a plus with an autistic child that has an obsession with screen time being his wind out and time out time.

Disliked Absolutely nothing.

Liked This site is extremely well kept, absolutely pristine facilities, and the onsite shop has all you need and more. The site is also very peaceful, and has some nice walks.

Disliked The waste is on a raised step so your waste pipe needs to be supported at a good angle to be able to drain correctly

Local attractions

In addition to walking and cycling routes, the Forest of Bowland National Landscape (15 minutes’ drive) also has thriving biodiversity, with birds such as hen harriers and peregrine falcons, plus bats and brown hares. And if you stay until after dark, on clear nights you should be treated to a pretty awe-inspiring stargazing spectacle. The centuries-old castle in Lancaster (20 minutes) is well worth a visit: it was here that a series of notorious witch trials took place in the 1610s. Also within the castle (specifically the castle’s former prison) is the Police Museum, which runs events such as craft activities and talks. When you’re after a day at the beach, you can choose between Morecambe (25 minutes) and Blackpool (40 minutes). At the former, you can pose for a picture next to the Eric Morecambe Statue or walk the length of the Stone Jetty to Trafalgar Point, at the very end. Blackpool also has the waterfront Blackpool Pleasure Beach complex, with hair-raising thrill rides.
