Families should hotfoot it right now to Lancashire’s Whitehough Outdoor Centre. Operated by Burnley FC in the Community, the centre is a 22-acre outdoor education facility in untamed Pendle countryside. Set in gorgeous Lancashire woodland and fields with spectacular views of fells and valleys, there’s lots of open space on the camping field, with ample room to park your car beside your tent if the weather permits (and if it doesn't, there's a car park). The grass pitches are all sheltered by trees, and there are toilet facilities on site, along with a designated washing-up area. Spark up a barbecue for more outdoor fun around the campfire with the kids, and if self-catering isn’t your style, there are pubs within a five-minute drive or 20-minute walk from the site. If you want to get stuck into activities, there are around 20 activities which can be booked in advance (subject to instructor availability and for groups of 10+ only), including crate stacking, obstacle courses, archery, high ropes and orienteering. Some practical bits and bobs now: this is a dog-friendly site, but your four-legged pals must be kept on leads at all times on site and always cleaned up after, please.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Quiet site, football pitch for the kids and very peaceful, cheap and cheerful

Disliked: Site is on a hill so uneven pitches and the toilets are a good walk away through boggy mud

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Quiet basic site just what we wanted

Disliked: Field still boggy but that was due to the time of year and how far away the toilets were

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We loved the surrounding area. Toilet and shower available. Washing up area (not shown on arrival).

Disliked: No level pitches. Nowhere to explore within the Centre. Wasn't able to drive car to pitch area (maybe due to weather). Long haul of camping equipment from car park to pitch site and all up hill

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Quiet site with lovely surrounding area. Short walk to the car park. Toilet and shower were clean and tidy.

Disliked: Site is a very steep hill. Everything slides down your tables and you have to strategically place your chair so you don’t tip out. And orientate your tent where your head is pointing up hill whilst you sleep. Huge piles of animal poo everywhere. Was hard to avoid.

From the manager: thanks for your feedback, we are delighted you enjoyed your stay with us. Having checked the field this morning we aren't able to find any huge piles of animal poo? the only thing we could find are the mounds of grass from the last cut of the year mulching which can look rather similar, we will have these removed as soon as possible. thanks again for the feedback.
