  • Simple and spacious rural site just outside the village of Shap
  • Windermere and Lowther Castle & Gardens within a half-hour drive
  • Dog-friendly site with easy access from the A6 or M6
Stopping over for a night on a long M6 journey or searching for a Cumbria base from which you can explore the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks? Either way, Lea Field Shap is in an excellent location just outside the village of Shap. This small rural site is in an easy-to-reach spot just off the A6 and a couple of minutes’ drive from Junction 39 of the M6, putting it in a most convenient spot for either a single night or a longer break. The village has a small supermarket, a café and a couple of pubs to help you sort easy meals and drinks. The pitch area here is nicely spacious, but guest numbers are kept purposefully low to make sure there’s plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the fresh air and rural views. You’ll have access to electric hookups, fresh water and a waste disposal point, and you’re welcome to set up a gazebo or awning for a bit of extra shelter. There’s a nicely laidback atmosphere on site, with kids and dogs welcome and campfires and barbecues permitted as long as you’re careful with them. Do note, though, that there are no toilets or showers on site so you’ll need to be self-sufficient on the bathroom front.

What customers say

This is a welcoming, clean, and tidy rural campsite, praised for its friendly owners and convenient location near the M6 and local amenities. Guests enjoyed lovely views, ample space for children and dogs, and good electric hook-ups. While some noted road and train noise, most found it acceptable given the location. The site is described as simple and basic, particularly suited for campervans due to the absence of toilet and shower facilities. Manager comments indicate ongoing development plans.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely well kept little site. Owners were friendly and we chose where to pitch which was perfect as we had beautiful views with a lovely sunset. You are close to a road and train line but this did not bother us and certainly was not intrusive, in fact we enjoyed the sound of the train going by. Great little site.

Disliked Obviously no toilet block but we knew this when we booked so no complaint.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely hosting family, with brand new waste disposal for both grey water and your toilet too. A large area to choose from if you don't require electricity, with lovely views of the hills and mother nature giving all for you to sit, listen and admire . There is plenty of room at the entrance and electrical hookups.
M6 is a stone throw away and a chip shop and store located in the village I believe. Kendal is not far either just 12 miles with all the major stores available.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay

Disliked As warned there is a train line near by and as a light sleeper I found it quite different to be honest.
Bound to say everyone loves a shower but thats a wish list 🤔🤣
Just on approach a larger sign 👍👍

Local attractions

This is a particularly sweet spot for walkers, wildlife watchers, cyclists and those in search of other outdoor adventures, with the Lake District National Park just to the west and the Yorkshire Dales to the east. There are walking and hiking trails directly from the site, and the site owners can point you towards lovely spots for wild swimming, watersports or fishing. Heading into the Lakes, you may like to follow the trail to Aira Force waterfall and Castlerigg Stone Circle (both 35 minutes’ drive), go birdwatching at Hawes Water (20 minutes) or take boat trips on Windermere (half an hour). Turning towards the Dales, places like Rutter Force (25 minutes) and Smardale Gill Viaduct (half an hour) might be on the menu. For a bit of local history, pay a visit to Lowther Castle & Gardens (15 minutes), with its fabulous ruins, landscaped gardens and large adventure playground, or medieval Brougham Castle (20 minutes), where the River Eamont meets the River Lowther. Closer to home, the ruins of Shap Abbey (five minutes) are worth visiting, and you can follow up at the village’s pool (England’s highest outdoor pool, fact fans…).
