Piper Hole Goat Farm: Goat kids on the farm

General

  • Wild camping on a Cumbria goat farm in Ravenstonedale
  • A 15-minute drive to Kirkby Stephen for shops; 20 minutes to Sedbergh
  • Farm shop on site for local meat, cheese and ice creams

What a setting for walkers and cyclists, edging the Westmorland Dales in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. A family-run affair, Piper Hole Goat Farm has a handful of grassy pitches a five-minute drive from Ravenstonedale village in Cumbria.

The farm is holistically run, with signposted walks through wildflower meadows in early summer, looking over goats grazing in the fields and sheep out on the fell. As the animals roam pretty freely, please check in with staff on arrival for parking info and directions to your pitch.

You’ll probably want to get out and about on the moors as quickly as possible, but don’t forget all those pretty market towns like Sedbergh and Richmond, where you can potter around farmers’ markets and indie shops. And with the north’s reputation for good grub, real ales and artisan gins, it’s well worth checking out the pubs in Ravenstonedale too.

Back on site, the pitches may be simple (amenities include toilet, showers and a communal fridge) but they're well set for some tasty treats. The on-site farm shop sells ice cream, cheese and soap made from goats’ milk, along with other handy bits and bobs like local meat for barbecues (bring your own from home). You can also stock up on any other essentials at the supermarkets in Kirkby Stephen.

Please note

No gas barbecues allowed.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Minimum spacing of 2 metres between pitches.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

If reception is closed on arrival: please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Very friendly family run campsite, decent shower block and toilet facilities that are kept very clean. The power did cut in them a few times but staff are always on hand and they were back up and running in a few minutes. Lovely area, great views with a mile walk to a local pub who give a 10% discount for people staying at Piper Hole. Great food with very generous portion sizes.
Due to it being the end of the season, staff put on a bonfire for guests. Great night with alcoholic drinks provided, marshmellows for roasting on the fire and sausages etc too.
Spacious pitches too so site doesn't feel too cramped.

I absolutely love this campsite and have visited twice this year. Its a lovely size with great views of the surrounding area. There are some great circular walks straight from the campsite and walks to the pub also. The family that run the farm are really helpful, friendly and relaxed with check in and out. There are some good facilities such as a kitchen area for washing up, a kettle, fridge and microwave should you need it. Oh and let’s not forget the cute goats 🐐😊

A fantastic site! We travelled as a family with friends and we both have a 4 year old. They absolutely loved it, being able to run about and play in the trees on the rope swings but we could see them from our pitch which meant we could relax too. The farm is lovely and the facilities are brilliant, the kids loved the goats exploring the farm. The toilets and showers were spotless and the shower was electric so lovely and warm. The owners Ruth and Frank were brilliant, really welcoming and Heather was great, on the Saturday evening they put on a little party for the campers and it was great to bring everyone together. We hired the hot tub/bbq hut on the first night and that was fab! A great addition to the site. There wasn’t anything we needed the site didn’t have, we also purchased some lovely goats cheese from them. The site is also in walking distance to some lovely pubs and walks, even with our little ones as there was a park nearby. Thank you for a brilliant stay, We will deff be back next year!

Lovely little site. Owners were very welcoming. Nice flat pitch. Liked the no cars next to tent rule (once you’d unloaded). As it was their last weekend of opening the owners hosted a bbq and bonfire which was good fun.

Shop selling gifts and goat related products on site. Communal kitchen with microwave, boiler and communal fridge, although someone did pinch my milk, which has nothing to do with owners, more about other folk camping that don’t understand campsite etiquette!

Proper toilet and shower and although there was only one shower, it was amazing, best campsite shower ever.

Also a hot tub and sauna for hire.

We also went to see the goats.

Only thing that spoilt it was the unbelievably noisy kids. Parents did nothing to quieten them down, incessant screaming and playing with a noisy toy machine gun, well after the usual 10pm curfew that is the norm on campsites. Again this isn’t a reflection on the owners, again more about people who do not normally camp and don’t know how to behave.

Fabulous weekend, Yorkshire Dales are beautiful, plenty of places to visit. Fat Lamb Inn at the end of the road is worth a visit, good food if a tad expensive.

Will definitely visit the area again and the campsite.

    Disliked:

Very noisy children. I get that children are noisy when they are playing, but screaming and playing with toy machine guns after the 10pm quiet time is not on.

    Not a reflection in campsite.
