General

  • Peaceful rural Cumbria site between Yorkshire Dales and Lake District
  • A 15-minute drive to Kendal and 25 minutes to the coast
  • Simple pitches with basic facilities; 10 minutes' drive from the M6

Wild camping in style but with a few basic amenities thrown in to make life a bit more comfy? Gorgeous rural views but with easy access from the motorway? Many wishlist boxes are likely to be ticked by the mix on offer at Cumbria’s Warth Hill.

A mere 10 minutes’ drive from junction 36 of the M6 is this peaceful spot with stunning views out over the green landscapes of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, with glimpses of Morecambe Bay beyond. That handy location between two national parks also means lots of scope to get out for walks, bike rides and other outdoors activities – and with coastal days a distinct possibility too.

The wild camping vibe comes partly from those lovely views, and partly from the fact that it’s a laidback place where you can pick your own pitch (with plenty of space to choose from), bring dogs along and set up off-ground barbecues or firepits. Toilets and showers are available to guests, however, so you don’t have to live entirely wild here.

Top barbecue idea? Take the two-mile walk to the local farm shop to load up on local produce for your grill (and stop in the café for refreshment while you’re there). For other supplies or to treat yourselves to meals out, it’s a 10-minute drive to Kirkby Lonsdale or 15 minutes to Kendal (or look out for several good pubs and restaurants dotted around the local countryside).

Just back from site after 3 night stay. This is a wild camp site as the information states but with clean warm toilets and showers for a touch of comfort. The views are simply stunning with full panoramic of the coast, into Yorkshire and the Lakes. remember your are on top of a tall hill so be prepared for exposure to the elements which we had all of them. Sun, showers, wind, rain, fog and frost but with a well placed firepit just sit back and enjoy the views, peace and quiet. The drive up to the site needs to be considered as its a track with stone chippings so for those with a standard car just consider but don't let it put you off this gem of a site. I have a 4x4 so wasn't an issue in any weather. Enjoy.

First time camping and it was everything we wanted and more. From/living in London so this place felt like the real countryside, beautiful views in every direction. Spotless toilets and shower rooms, few people there so there is significant distance between other campers (biggest worry personally).
    10/10 will go back

Great views with a secluded feel on the top of a hill, the toilets and showers were kept clean and tidy with everything needed for camping onsite (toilets/showers/sinks/general waste & recycling /parking/water points) For a campsite advertised as basic, one must admit to being rather impressed with the toilet facilities. I like that parking is away from the main field yet less than a minute walk from the tent, no cars on the field sure does improve the already amazing view!

    Disliked:

Very steep and Stoney drive up the hill. Being exposed on top of the hill means lots of wind and strong breeze even if the conditions in the valley are calm, for this reason it is not a good idea to bring a cheap or older tent - you need a good quality tent that can cope with moderate winds on this campsite, after all you are exposed on a hill!
