Scale Bank Camping: Summer camping

General

  • Grassy Cumbria pop-up farm site by a slowly flowing beck
  • A 20-minute drive to the edge of the Lake District; a mile from a zoo
  • Half a mile from a pub and 10 minutes' drive from the beach

Hear that? It's the call of coastal Cumbria, and it's telling you to book a break in the stunning South Lakes…

And what better place to do it than Scale Bank Camping? This peaceful site is set on a working family farm 20 minutes' drive from the edge of the Lake District National Park and 10 minutes from the coast. You're truly in the best of both worlds here, as all sorts of attractive bodies of water are within easy reach.

This is a simple pop-up site with amenities that include running water, portaloos and waste disposal. Other than that, you're left to your own devices to plan the kind of break you want, whether that involves spending relaxed days on site, following the course of the slowly flowing beck to hidden woodland coves or hunting for birds and beasties in the woods.

Scale Bank Camping is two miles north of Dalton-in-Furness, an agreeable market town with a railway station, a public leisure centre and lots of shops. It's also half a mile from a popular local pub where you can sip on real ales by cosy logburning stoves; it's accessed via a gate just opposite the pitching field. Meanwhile, 51 acres of animal explores await a mile away down the road at South Lakes Safari Zoo, a great family-friendly attraction that can be easily reached on foot.

Lovely friendly family that run it, good communication before hand letting us know of what was on in the local pub so we could book a table (burger night was a fab recommendation). Literally across the road from the pub, so good location for the pub meal, as well as days out in lakes, at seaside and even a zoo just down the road. Site is a field that although a little sloped has enough flattish places to pitch comfortably, it was spacious enough for number of campers and as has different levels, had a lovely atmosphere.

Thankyou for your comment, due to the volume over the bank holiday we did find it difficult to keep the toilets in the clean condition that I would of liked, however in the future we are looking to upgrade our facilities.

We were greeted at the entrance by the farmer and directed to the field where his partner was there greeting everyone. Told we could pitch up wherever we wanted. We chose a spot right next to the small beck. There was a local pub across the road that had easy access to thru a gate at the far end of the field. Saturday night is burger night so we had booked a table beforehand and all the food is homemade and 10☆ in my opinion. The site is very well situated for places to go to. Very close to Barrow and also a wildlife park within a few minutes drive away. We had a very peaceful and relaxing weekend away here and would definitely go back.

    Disliked:

Only downside was there were only 2 portaloos and they were at the very entrance to the field, so quite a long walk to them if you pitch at the far end of the field (could do with a few spaced out in between and at far end) but as its newly opened its understandable that its all a new learning curve.

From the manager...

Thankyou for your detailed review glad you enjoyed your stay, loved your pics😊 its good to get your feedback and we will be focusing on these for next year plans to enhance the site.

Every thing was great, the kids loved walking around the site and playing in the stream. The owners were extremely helpful throughout our stay also. Close enough to attractions for the day out like a zoo but we had great fun on site relaxing and playing. Lots of animals to see like cows and sheep etc in the opposite fields

Good to hear you went to visit our sheep & cows in the neighbouring field, plus enjoyed what the area has to offer especially our land with all its hidden gems. Hope to see you soon.

Local attractions

For active times, check the forecast, pack proper kit and prepare to climb fells like Orrest Head (40 minutes' drive), just above Windermere, or head to Whicham (35 minutes) to scale the heights of Black Combe. For further sporty options, you might like to hire a paddleboard or wind-powered vessel at Coniston Boating Centre (35 minutes) and head to Go Ape Grizedale (35 minutes) for an excellent treetop obstacle course.

Of course, there are other ways to take in the natural splendour of the Lakes – a trip aboard a steamer in Ullswater (an hour), going sightseeing around Aira Force waterfall (an hour and 10 minutes), or riding the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway (45 minutes) are all good ways forward if you're looking for spectacular scenery without too much physical exertion.

Finally, to learn a little about the area's past, turn to the timeworn ruins of Furness Abbey (10 minutes), the industrial heritage of The Dock Museum in Barrow-in-Furness (15 minutes) or admire the magnificent house and gardens at Muncaster Castle (45 minutes).
