  • Go Ape Grizedale 35 minutes’ drive; Predator Experience 15 minutes
  • Lake Windermere views; walks and bike rides direct from the pods
Escaping to the Lake District? Not too confident about pitching a tent? Go right ahead and book yourself into a heated wooden pod at Ghyll Head. Surrounded by peaceful woodland, the site has stunning views down to Windermere and beyond to the Lakeland Fells, with an array of walking and mountain-biking routes accessible directly from your door. Ghyll Head also sits 10 minutes’ drive from the cafés, pubs and shops of lively Bowness-on-Windermere, should you wish to mix up rural pursuits with more urban pastimes. On the inside, each camping pod is decked out with comfy single beds with mattresses, plus under-bed heating, LED lighting, plug sockets and USB charging points so you can stay in contact with the outside world. Don’t forget, however, to bring your own bedding or sleeping bags. Private outdoor picnic tables and benches sit by each pod, so you can eat al fresco and soak up the views. No need to worry about leaving all your worldly goods behind when you’re out and about exploring either, as the pods are lockable. Simple on-site facilities to make life easy for you include showers, washing-up sinks and a sheltered shared dining area.

Camping pod

Liked: The pods were really clean, comfortable and a good size. It was clear that there was excellent care taken over the site as there was a super friendly member of staff cleaning every morning. The single beds were an excellent size and we were pleasantly surprised that the pods had heating. There was enough plugs for everyone to charge their phones. We were able to use our camp stove and fire pit which was important to us. We were also impressed with the kitchen facilities which had a large shared fridge, microwave and toaster as well as inside facilities for washing up. Whilst we didn't use it the communal space with seating and a ping pong table was also an excellent touch and would be a brilliant space for groups across multiple pods to hang out. We had an excellent stay. It was the perfect combination of camping and not camping, which on a rainy weekend was exactly what we needed.

Camping pod

Liked: Hive Pods were situated in a perfect delightful place. Enclosed tree space. Fire pit if wanted to use. Toilet and showers just a minute walk. And even a little kitchen area. Children enjoyed the social room on wet days and bicycle a little added extra to explore the picturesque area... Alan the onsite worker was friendly and very helpful with the knowledge of the area...

Disliked: Showers that go very cold then get extremely hot. I did have to set the perfect temperature that stayed without it going cold or randomly hot. I kept the shower going for the children to use otherwise they might get hot

Liked: Super clean Beds where like staying in a 5 star hotel woke up feeling super fresh. Excellent heating which if required would definitely keep it warm. Excellent facilities and to top it off if weather was bad a communal large room with plenty of tables and even a table tennis table..

Local attractions

Those of you who’re keen to get active have plenty of choice. Go dinghy sailing on the lake from Windermere Outdoor Adventure Centre (10 minutes’ drive), hire a kayak to paddle around the shoreline from Windermere Canoe and Kayak (five minutes) or take care of any rainy days with a few laps of the indoor pool at Kendal Leisure Centre (25 minutes). Kids will almost certainly adore running around among the trees at Go Ape Grizedale (35 minutes) or the family-oriented obstacle courses at Treetop Trek Windermere (15 minutes). Glebe Park (10 minutes) is another clever option for sporty families, with mini golf, pitch-and-putt courses and tennis courts. If you’ve managed to wear everybody out, perhaps a quiet day is on the cards. Take the kid to bottle feed cuddly lambs at the Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre (15 minutes) – where you’ll also get a tasty locally sourced lunch. Up the animal ante with a visit to Predator Experience (15 minutes), where you can walk with majestic wolves and feed them treats.
