  • Back to basics woodland hideaway with views of Skiddaw
  • Direct access to the Reivers Cycling Route and near to the Cumbria Way
  • Eat a locally sourced breakfast with your hosts and fellow campers
Ditching the tourist trail? Make your way to this woodland hideaway in the northern fells of the Lake District National Park. At Overwater Woodlands, there are on-site chefs ready to serve you breakfast, barbecue and picnics as you wish… and just look at those stunning views of Skiddaw and its neighbouring fells too. The small-scale camp has a sustainability focus. It’s owned by Lois and Nick, a well-travelled pair who have owned the land for 20 years. They have an arsenal of local recommendations, including (but not limited to) the best spots to pick wild raspberries. They’re big believers in the ‘analogue world’ – not the digital – so there is no wifi. If you need to, schedule getting online for your trip to the local pub in Bassenthwaite or the tea rooms in Uldale, which are both five minutes’ drive away. Guests may find that they need to walk 100 metres up the road to get a phone signal too. Meanwhile, keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels, deer and all manner of birds – and look upwards for excellent dark skies on clear nights. Lois and Nick are both experienced chefs (and Nick has worked in professional kitchens). Let them know your plans, as they're happy to rustle up a freshly made breakfast, dinner or picnic. They know the local farmers (and that means plenty fresh produce) and can cater for vegans, vegetarians and people with gluten intolerances. Whether you eat privately or around the communal firepit is up to you, although they'd love to see everyone make friends by the firepit over the tasty food. Overwater Woodlands has a composting toilet, washing-up facilities and a hot shower – it’s almost wild camping, but not quite. It’s also dog-friendly.

Binsey non-electric forest floor tent pitch (two person)

Liked: I joined with four friends for two nights at Overwater Woodlands. Met by our wonderful hosts, Nick and Lois on arrival, who showed us to our three charming pitching spots (I was solo, the others comprised of two couples) with an arrival drink. The pitches (cheerily named after local mountains) were spacious for their purpose, whilst also offering a nice degree of privacy from the neighbouring spots. Facilities such as the compost toilet were easy to find and use, as well as the added bonus of access to the hosts downstairs shower! There is an excellent firepit with plenty of wood to keep warm on those chillier nights, with a vast tarpaulin to protect from the elements. The food offerings are sublime - I could write endlessly but in short, Lois and Nick are fantastic chefs with a real passion for using locally sourced ingredients. Whether it be the delightful breakfast sandwich, or optional lunch/dinner add on - it was all delicious (special mention to the home made bread!). The hosts are knowledgeable about the area and activities, so don't be shy to ask them for suggestions (we ended up doing 'cold water therapy', exhilarating but not for the faint-hearted!). All in all, a wonderful weekend - cosy pitches with stunning views of Skiddaw, fantastic food and amazing hosts. Thank you both and see you again soon!

Local attractions

Hikers and cyclists, you’re in a great spot. The owners of Overwater Woodlands will be pleased to hand you a map, although you don't need one to access the 170-mile, coast-to-coast Reivers Cycling Route because it runs directly through the site. The Cumbria Way Walk is another big name among keen hikers in the Lake District. Handily, guests can join the trail at Orthwaite Farm (15 minutes’ walk). No need to admire Skiddaw from afar all day long either, as it’s within easy striking distance (20 minutes' drive). If it feels like the time to take off for a Lake District town, the two closest spots are Keswick (20 minutes) and Cockermouth (20 minutes). The former is great for visits to the Castlerigg Stone Circle, Derwentwater and the Theatre by the Lake, while the latter is a dream for Georgian architecture and visiting poet William Wordsworth’s old home.
