Candlewyck: Peaceful camping field

General

  • Secluded glamping spot close to Ulverston in Cumbria’s Lake District
  • Ulverston 10 minutes’ walk; South Lakes Safari Zoo 10 minutes’ drive
  • Luxury bell tents with kitchen and private bathroom; close to walks

In a peaceful paddock setting in the southern hinterland of the Lake District, Candlewyck is a site that has just a handful of glamping tents. Each is beautifully decorated and well equipped, and each has a private loo and shower facility.

Located in seven acres of private land, each bell tent is individually designed to give you that 'home from home' vibe, with a firepit for barbecues, plus indoor and outdoor seating for catching up with family and friends. There are charging points for your devices, tea and coffee on hand, and even a wine cooler and – best of all – proper comfy double beds with top-quality bedding.

A full kitchen on site gives you exclusive use of a fridge, gas and electric cookers, hot and cold water and a toaster so every day gets kick-started in the right way.

This dog-friendly spot is a 10-minute walk into the pretty market town of Ulverston, where you can pick up essentials and try a couple of artisan beers in the local pubs.

Country walks abound for all levels of fitness, while families can walk the length of Bardsea beach (10 minutes’ drive) and splash about in the rockpools. Big-hitting Lake District attractions including Windermere and Bowness are comfortably within an hour’s drive from base camp.

The location is perfect as it’s quiet but only a short walk from Ulverston. Our children absolutely loved it. Our tent had everything you could need and the fire pit and bbq were also a nice touch. There are plenty of things to do in the surrounding area so it’s great for young families. Our children left one of their teddies behind and the owners sent it on to us in the post which was greatly appreciated and shows how well you are treated.

The Area and staff. Accessibility to town and relaxed campsite. The kitchen with fridge was great, the tent was lovely, the fire pit all set up for us was great and the wood that was made available and replenished was also great. The little touches like free tea/ coffee and local organic milk was also good. Sam and Gary also have some good ideas of places to eat etc which was lovely.

    Disliked:

Toilets and bathroom - but understand work is being done to make a more permanent solution. Whilst the toilet/ shower were my least favourite, it would not stop me returning.

From the manager...

Many thanks for your comments and we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Candlewyck.

Reference your comments regarding the showers and toilets I would like to reply to your points raised. The rechargeable showers that we purchased, which were researched extensively, were described as being voted the number one choice for camping / glamping along with the privacy tents where they are positioned. Also the chemical toilet and sink unit combination were also a quality best seller too. I fully understand that the showers are not what you probably have within your own bathroom at home, but this all adds to the great experience of glamping.
But hopefully next year the above will be housed within a more structured unit.

Gary the host was very welcoming and gave us a tour,he explained how everything worked . For a new venture they have certainly got all you need. It's not too far to the local town ( 10minute walk) and nor to far to drive to consiston or windermere. There's a farm shop 2minutes walk selling local produce and fresh made cakes .
Very dog friendly which was a must for us .
Looking at booking for next year !
The views are stunning from camp!

    Disliked:

Nothing really , we mentioned to Gary that the only thing we'd alter was a purpose built shower/toilet block which he's already got plans for in the future .

From the manager...

Thanks for your lovely comments and we are so happy that you enjoyed your time here at Candlewyck.

The individual shower and toilet privacy tents are working very well this year, but we are looking to have a more structured offering in place for next year.

Gary and Sam were very welcoming and provided everything we needed for our short stay, including a hot water bottle for our 2 year old.
The tent was immaculate and the facilities were good for a comfortable stay. The location was great, just a short walk to Ulverston town centre but still out in the country.

Absolutely loved the attentiveness of our hosts and the personal touches. V warm bedding provided, lots of options for charging your phones, torches and sources of light for when in the tent. There was also a well-equipped outdoor kitchen and optional BBQs and fire pits for guests.

Camping toilet and shower facilities also included.

We turned up v late for our stay (usual delays with littles) and again our hosts were absolutely lovely about it.

Highlights about the place - it is so peaceful and quiet, our girls loved listening to the sheep in the morning, nice to just have the three tents as well so you don't feel crowded. View of the hills are lovely. You are also just a 5 min walk into Ulverston town.

Sam and Gary were super lovely! Honestly I couldn’t fault anything with our stay.
Most lovely welcome, showed around and how to use things. They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and happy with everything.
The bell tents were beautiful and so nicely decorated. The private toilet and shower were a really nice addition to the stay and whilst the weather wasn’t on our side with high winds and rain, everything stayed in place and wasn’t an issue!
You have a gorgeous view of farmland in Ulverston and a lovely 10 minute walk down to the market town through forestry.
Really happy with our stay and we will most definitely be returning in the future!
    Thank you again guys!!
