  • Family-friendly farm site in the Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • Five minutes' drive to Sedbergh; 25 mins to Kendal
  • Easy access from the main road; a central point on the Dales Way
A camping break surrounded by the gorgeous scenery of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with no need to make your way down lots of winding country lanes? Life is nice and easy for guests at Hebblethwaite Farm Campsite, a family-friendly just off the A683 a mile and a half from Sedbergh. Getting your fix of rural scenery is straightforward at this Cumbria farm site – it’s a 15-minute drive from Junction 37 of the M6 (therefore also making it a handy option for a stopover on a long journey north or south). This is a working farm, so you’ll be sharing the place with the sheep and cows that live here full time; dogs are allowed as long as they’re well behaved. So, getting in should be simple – and so should getting out again, for those keen to explore on foot. The farm is at a central point of the Dales Way, and it's also at the start of several trails running up into the Howgills. Beyond that, the whole of the Yorkshire Dales unfold in the distance – and the Lake District is only about half an hour’s drive away too. It’s likely that it’s the views that have drawn you here – but the proximity of the town is a real bonus too. Sedbergh is best known as England’s Book Town, but it’s also a great place to pick up snacks and visit the butcher (which sells lamb from the farm among its all-local produce selection). There are a couple of local pubs within walking distance too. The camping setup is a simple one, with decent-sized pitches (allowing for parking and barbecues) that have access to portable toilets, mains drinking water and rubbish disposal.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: - Very friendly owners - Nice evening walk into Sedbergh - Great place to stop off overnight - Close to road with easy access - Quiet overnight, as is everywhere in this part of the country

Disliked: - Just a field with a porta-loo and tap; this was exactly what we wanted but might not suit everyone - It was easy for us to find because the other tent was visible from the road, but there's no signs

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Our weekend stay at Hebblethwaite farm campsite was brilliant! The field was very spacious, we landed very fortunate as we were sharing the field with one other tent over the weekend! The dogs loved having the space to run but we ensured they were under full control given we were surrounded by fields of sheep on the working farm! There are basic facilities (clean portaloo and drinking water tap) but all we needed for our stay. Overall we had a fantastic weekend despite the bit of rain we had! Thank you Richard for being so welcoming and on hand!

Local attractions

Make time for a good browse of Sedbergh (five minutes' drive) – the town earned its title of England’s Book Town because of its lovely independent bookshops and book cafés, and it’s also got a lovely art gallery in the form of Farfield Mill. Kendal (25 minutes) is another good town to visit, for the castle and museums as well as access to the Lake District beyond. While you’re that side of the M6, you could also stop by at the National Trust’s Sizergh estate and Lakeland Maze Farm Park (both 20 minutes), or head a little way north to the grand ruins of Lowther Castle (35 minutes), which has gorgeous gardens and an adventure playground in its grounds. Back over in the Yorkshire Dales, there are lots of walks and bike trails around for all abilities. A couple of popular spots nearby are Cautley Spout waterfall, Dent Village Heritage Centre and Museum (both 15 minutes) and the family-friendly Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (25 minutes).
