General

  • Quiet family-run pop-up site on a small working dairy and sheep farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Cautley Spout; walks and river activities nearby
  • Eggs sold on site; shops, pubs and restaurants in the local town

You won’t be short on fells, wild river swims and biking trails around Ashbeck Farm, just off the A683 on the way to Kirkby Stephen. This quiet, family-run pop-up site is on a small working dairy and sheep farm with views of the Howgill Fells, a group of hills where walking’s a banquet, and the river Rawthey at the bottom of the fields.

That means river activities are a-go here – depending on the water levels, wild swimming, canoeing and paddleboarding are some of the ways to muck in. There's a river trail, walks to the fells directly from the site or the 80-mile Dales Way running through Sedbergh, around 20 minutes’ walk away too.

Sedbergh is England’s official book town but it’s just about booksellers. There are shops, pubs and restaurants for a bite to eat or a few drinks before walking back. On the farm, there’s a small dairy herd, a flock of rough fell sheep, geese, a few belted Galloways and free-range hens living it up. There are eggs available to purchase and collect in the morning upon request, perhaps ready for a barbecue by your pitch.

The good-sized pitches have parking for your car and well-behaved dogs are welcome, either kept in sight or on a lead at all times due to the livestock and hens in fields next door (dog muck must be picked up). There’s a tap for drinking water and washing up and a portaloo, but no showers or waste disposal, so you’ll need to bag up rubbish yourselves and use the site’s recycling or bin for used barbecues.

Loved our first wild camping trip at Ashbeck Farm, getting back to basic with amazing views of the mountains and the children were inspired to paint the beautiful scenery. The host was great and the children got up and close to pet the animals. Cautly falls is just 10 mins away and had a walk up the beautiful falls. Definitely need to try Howgills homemade Icecream with a view. We will definitely be back next summer!!!

We liked the location, it's quiet and not where people heading to either the Dales or Lakes usually venture.

The owner is friendly and came to see that we had had a good time while we stayed.

The tent field is flat and quite free of rocks, which is a refreshing change, as I have stayed in sites where it's hard to pitch before. The pitches here are also spacious, allowing for plenty of space around a tent.

The facilities are very basic, but that's what is advertised, no surprises (aside from how nice the place is)

There are lots of places to walk close by, some beautiful mountains too.

    Disliked:

    Nothing to really dislike.
