Sykeside Camping Park: Overlooking the mountains

General

  • Remote location but with easy access to the Lake District and Cumbria
  • In a walker's paradise in the Dovedale Valley
  • Modern facilities and well-stocked shop

The placing of this Penrith park is pretty perfect. Get ready for Lake District and Cumbrian valley walks in sublime surroundings, at this friendly site in a walker's paradise at the northern foot of the Kirkstone Pass.

Although it's listed as in a remote location and is set deep and quietly in the Dovedale Valley, Sykeside Camping Park is easily accessible to the best of the Lake District and Cumbria, as it's just off the A592 and is no more than half an hour's drive from Ullswater, Patterdale, Glenridding, Ambleside, Coniston and Keswick. Cruising around Windermere is about 20 minutes away.

Sykeside's Dovedale Valley locale has it surrounded by Dove Crag, Hart Crag and Fairfield, and with the town of Brotherswater nearby. Short strolls around Brotherswater are among the walky local options, or you could have a longer hike from the town's high street, where many walks start. (Or take the also most pleasant option of just staying in town and seeking out your holiday local the Brotherswater Inn for a pint or two of regional ale among the splendid regional scenery.)

The Sykeside team has set the site out carefully to blend in with its surroundings and make the most of its natural settings, but have added modern amenities to keep guests comfy, like the shower and toilet facilities with shaving points and power points, and the laundry room with washing machine, tumble dryer and washing-up area.

Feel free to set yourself up here to ignore the rest of the outside world: the well-stocked shop sells most of what you might need including fresh food, camping equipment, maps and guides; and because of the site's position right at the bottom of the valley, telly reception is pretty unreliable and you'll not get a single bar on your mobile – did someone mention digital detox…?

The scenery. The location was stunning. It was handy having an on-site shop and pub too. Although fairly dated, the facilities were clean and the showers hot and powerful. We’d definitely come back.

    Disliked:

This isn’t a dislike as such, more for anyone reading to be aware. Mobile phone reception was non existent unless on EE, which the site makes very clear on their website. The free wifi that they advertise wasn’t particularly strong though, and didn’t work for us while we were here. It didn’t matter to us, but it might be considered a problem by others.

Small and friendly site. This was our second stay here and we loved every minute. Very well thought through with the current situation, showers and toilet blocks in use and clean, apart from less people on site and the smaller pub closed there wasn't much noticeable difference. Lovely surroundings. On site shop was very cheap for bits and bobs which was a plus when you've got two 5 year old children. We ate in the pub and found that a but pricey for what you got but it was tasty. Everyone respected each other on site which was a plus and camp fires aloud until 11pm and you aren't constantly hounded by (camp police) wardens 🤣. Overall experience was excellent yet again

Amazing location with great views. Enough toilets and showers so there wasnt many queues. Shop had all the basics and even more. Coffee maker with decent coffee. Literally no internet or phone reception! you can get it at the reception, if needed though.

    Disliked:

had to put the log fires out by 11PM. There must be a reason for it, but we didnt ask, to be fair. But that definitely didnt dampen our experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Sykeside campsite. Check-in was straightforward and the staff in the site office were helpful and polite.

We managed to find a nice spot not far from the hard standing pitches which worked well for us. We loved the spectacular scenery and the locality of Brotherswater Lake and Patterdale. We didn't climb the nearby hills this time but would love to do so on another occasion. The Brotherswater lake is absolutely stunning and is within 20 mins of the camp site if heading towards it from the top of the campsite or the bottom. We did the entire loop around in around a leisurely hour. There was a nice grassy section to picnic and paddle which we took advantage of on a couple of days

We liked being able to BBQ most days and have the fire-pit in the evening (must be out by 11 pm). As some other reviews stated it is a little bit of a wind tunnel being at the bottom of the valley but this didn't hinder us this week but might do in worse weather conditions.

Toilet blocks, showers, dishwashing and laundry are were all connected to the onsite shop which had a good variety of stock from tent repair kits through to BBQ essentials and fresh products such as milk, eggs and bacon. We were impressed that despite being miles from another shop the prices were very reasonable.

Regarding covid-19 arrangements, they seemed to have done a good job with it. There was a 6 person limit on the toilets and showers and a 3 person limit in the shop. Staff were usually nearby for helpful reminders and on the whole, it was pretty clean for a busy site.

There was absolutely no signal at all for us (Sky & Vodafone users) which on one hand was fantastic as it gave us a digital break but would have been useful if we needed to get in touch with anyone.

All in all, we had a lovely time and would recommend the site.

This is the 2nd time we stayed at this campsite and it's perfect! We love absolutely everything about it. Lovely views, good location, the bar/restaurant at the site if wanted food or a drink. Laundry/ washing up/ Toilet/shower facilities are good and clean! Even with covid restrictions campsite was very prepared for it and had hand sanitising stations and boards with "occupied/vaccant" Next to each facility to make sure they not overcrowded and that certain amount of people are there at the time. There is a lake next to the campsite if you fancy a walk to it its about 10-15min walk. The reception and bar staff were absolutely amazing, very welcoming and friendly as were the staff at the pub, food was very nice. There's also a shop at the reception which is very convenient and srocked up with fair prices.
A very friendly vibe at the campsite throughout our stay although everyone respected the rules about keeping the noise down late at night.
