  • Remote location but with easy access to the Lake District and Cumbria
  • In a walker's paradise in the Dovedale Valley
  • Modern facilities and well-stocked shop
The placing of this Penrith park is pretty perfect. Get ready for Lake District and Cumbrian valley walks in sublime surroundings, at this friendly site in a walker's paradise at the northern foot of the Kirkstone Pass. Although it's listed as in a remote location and is set deep and quietly in the Dovedale Valley, Sykeside Camping Park is easily accessible to the best of the Lake District and Cumbria, as it's just off the A592 and is no more than half an hour's drive from Ullswater, Patterdale, Glenridding, Ambleside, Coniston and Keswick. Cruising around Windermere is about 20 minutes away. Sykeside's Dovedale Valley locale has it surrounded by Dove Crag, Hart Crag and Fairfield, and with the town of Brotherswater nearby. Short strolls around Brotherswater are among the walky local options, or you could have a longer hike from the town's high street, where many walks start. (Or take the also most pleasant option of just staying in town and seeking out your holiday local the Brotherswater Inn for a pint or two of regional ale among the splendid regional scenery.) The Sykeside team has set the site out carefully to blend in with its surroundings and make the most of its natural settings, but have added modern amenities to keep guests comfy, like the shower and toilet facilities with shaving points and power points, and the laundry room with washing machine, tumble dryer and washing-up area. Feel free to set yourself up here to ignore the rest of the outside world: the well-stocked shop sells most of what you might need including fresh food, camping equipment, maps and guides; and because of the site's position right at the bottom of the valley, telly reception is pretty unreliable and you'll not get a single bar on your mobile – did someone mention digital detox…?

Liked: Alright area

Disliked: My tent had a hole in which I didn't realise(my fault), I then thought it'd be fine to sleep in my car for the night given if had a long day travel and I could use the rest of my equipment outside the car-cooker etc. I was then woken up and told I couldn't sleep in my car and I had to leave, told they didn't have a permit for people sleeping in cars but as I was leaving I got stopped and offered a space in which I could sleep in my car. They just said they didn't have a permit then proceeded to offer me for extra money a spot in which all of a sudden they have a permit? No sense to me at all and won't be going back even with a new tent, didn't seem too friendly in the end of things, shame really cos was looking forward to it but turned out to be a complete waste of time, part my fault but to say they don't have a permit and then offer me a price in which they've all of a sudden got a permit. Ridiculous.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Good sized open space with free choice of pitch. Flat ground. Amazing panoramic views around the site. Very clean toilets and shower facilities. Good on-site shop.

Disliked: No access to the site via car past 23:00. Car park space near the pitches was somewhat limited.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: A great place me and my twin brother found to pitch up and hike. Great atmosphere, safe place, clean toilets and showers. Good pub (better described as an inn) with good food. Absolutely professional, informative and hospitable staff, can not fault them at all, great service all round. The little shop is handy as with the washrooms etc. close by to either Windermere or ullswater and many hiking routes with different variety of difficulties from beginner to more intermediate to more pro-longed hikes. Scenery is beautiful.

Disliked: A couple pointers regarding the inn, they don’t do walks in, you have to book in advance for a table to be able to eat there. It’s clear the ‘small’ inn can not accommodate the full size of the camp grounds for food, so first booked first served I guess. But also with the barn pub closed half the year due to the seasons and low staff and cost to run it as one staff member pointed out, you’d think you’d be able to drink in the inn but as you are allowed to visit for a drink, if they are busy with reservations, you will have to sit outside unless there is empty tables inside. I gathered they don’t like people drinking at the bar. It is a small inn/pub to bear in mind and is understandable.
