General

  • Safe and spacious site for letting kids run around
  • A popular setting for anglers and cyclists
  • Lakes, Hadrian’s Wall and the Scottish border within 40 minutes’ drive

Free-range kids? Flapping around a car-free environment in Cumbria’s heavenly Eden Valley close to the Lake District National Park?

You’d be in a pretty pickle to pick the Main attraction at peaceful, popular and family-run Mains Farm Camping and Caravan Site, but it might be parents gleefully clinking glasses in the child-friendly landscape while the kids run around… Anglers and bikers flock here too as the farm has its own single bank salmon and trout fishing hotspot 200 metres up the road (arrange on arrival) and it’s used by cyclists as a stopoff to rest weary bones on a C2C pedal.

This is the Cumbrian countryside, so scenic hikes come as additional standard: take one of the Mains Farm trails across their own land to feel proper exclusive. The Lake District, Hadrian’s Wall and Gretna Green on the Scottish border are all 20 to 40 minutes’ drive away.

But back to the kids… wind them up and let them roam: although Mains Farm is easy to get to from the M6, it’s well away from roads and is small enough to keep an eye on their movements; all cars have to be parked away from the pitching areas too. All this and a popular playground: expect not to see offspring from dawn to dusk…

Campfires are allowed – hire a fire basket from amiable owners Robert and Julia – and an undercover eating area has a log burner and a barbecue. Guests also have use of two kitchen areas, a secure store for bicycles, a washing machine, decent wifi, and clean shower and toilet blocks converted from the farm’s former stables.

Supplies can be sorted from the small supermarket in Lazonby village about a mile away; if you’re feeling too lazy/holidaylike to cook, two pubs serving food are within the same distance (ask Robert or Julia to book you a table in advance: like Mains Farm, the village pubs are pretty popular).

I booked for my sons 10th birthday as he wanted to go lake district. When I arrived I had a lovely welcome from the owners explaining where our pod was. The site was a lovely farm. The pod was lovely and cosy. Facilities were great women and men's separate showers and toilets washing up area kitchen area. There was a lovely honesty shop which had some lovely homemade cakes my son loved the flap jack. The views were amazing we and a lovely stroll down the side of the river with the dog. Nice peaceful site.

As soon as we pulled up into the grounds the site has a good vibe, Robert is very welcoming and informative about his site and the surrounding areas. We planned on taking our son paddle boarding so Robert told us where to go. We stayed in a pod for two nights which was different for us as we would normally use our tent. The site has purpose built pods, bell tents, room for tents and mobile homes/vans. The site isn’t cramped up like most sites.
There is a decent sized play park which our son enjoyed. The amenities are good plenty of toilets and good showers, plenty of sinks to wash up also a fridge, microwave, toaster, and hot plate if you required. Another handy thing was an external dog shower. All in all we couldn’t fault the site and would without a doubt stay again in the future.

The owners were lovely, helped us with anything. Told us some good spots to go walking and sight seeing, we had got the wrong directions from Google maps on Tuesday whilst on our way to lacys caves and the owner had drove past us, she was nice enough to offer to drive us to penrith but we just wanted to get back to our pod and she told us how to take a shortcut instead of walking on the main roads. The facilities were good and always clean. The view from our pod was mesmerising, we had come for us to have a break and some peace and quiet, we got exactly that and there was no disturbances from other people at any time. We also thought the Honesty Shop was a good addition.

    Disliked:

The only thing me and my partner did not like which was no fault of the Mains Farm but if we were to come again we would definitely drive and have a car as we had to walk everywhere due to how rural the area was.
